The fire’s progression was quick and seen on the horizon, they made the split decision to grab the baby bag, car seat and themselves and evacuate the building. By this time, many people decided to evacuate; the roads became flooded with cars and escape would be difficult. Instead of going with the flow of traffic, they made a left, leading them directly in front of Cardinal Newman/ toward Fountaingrove parkway.
They were met with walls of flames. Their apartment complex, the trees, the buildings surrounding their home were a blaze. The wind gusted with fire embers that ignited anything that had not been set afire. Everything was a burning warzone. They witnessed the Hilton burn as they made it to the freeway and traveled toward Windsor for safety.
That morning, they found out that everything they owned was incinerated. Memories, furniture, family photos, clothes, things needed for work; everything. Insurance was not in place. The appointment to get insurance was set for that Monday. Reestablishing themselves will be a task in itself with limited resources.
For now, Cheri and her family are staying in Windsor with my parents where we have made a makeshift home in the living room consisting of a fold-out bed, a crib and a dresser. The space is tight for a family of four but with family/ community support, they have been making it through this nightmare one day at a time.
This money will hopefully allow them to get back on their feet after such a huge tragedy nothing can will ever be the same but anything helps and we are greatly appreciative thank you all so much.
