Help the Sayre Family

Donation protected

Benji, Molly, and Clark Sayre were in a car accident on their way home from a soccer game on Sunday, April 18. Their car was hit by an oncoming car that crossed the centerline. While Molly and Clark had only very minor injuries, Benji sustained a severe traumatic brain injury, several injuries to his face, and other broken bones. Benji has been hospitalized since the accident and has slowly regained consciousness. He is making steady progress in rehabilitation, and his treatment team believes that he will continue to heal and recover over time. He will be using a wheelchair for the foreseeable future, and possibly permanently. Even if he is able to walk on level ground again, it is unclear whether he will be able to walk up and down stairs.

Given this new reality, Benji and Molly must make modifications to their home and plan for long term care needs. Home modifications are extensive and will require, at minimum, a ramp from the driveway so that Benji can enter and exit the house, a vertical platform lift so that Benji can access bedroom and bathroom spaces on the second floor, and the addition of an accessible bathroom. Transportation and long term care needs will include a wheelchair-accessible van, medical equipment not covered by insurance, and staffing to provide in-home care while Molly is at work.

Initial estimates for home modifications, transportation, and care costs are a minimum of $150,000. Long term costs are impossible to predict but will likely be far higher. They have around $50,000 from savings and gifts received from family, friends, and colleagues since the accident. Our initial goal is to raise $100,000, and we also challenge this community to exceed that goal to help the Sayres secure their future as a family, healing together in their own home.

If you would prefer to donate through a different source, Molly will be establishing an account with PNC Bank for this purpose in the next week. We will post details on how to contribute to this account in an update once it is open. We will post regular updates here about
contributions to that account to share progress on our goal.
