Anyone who has known me the past 9 years knows that my cat Winnie is my whole life. Winnie was born with Hydrocephalus (spinal fluid on her brain) when we found her at 2 weeks old. Her mother abandoned her because of that condition. After taking her to the vet, they said if she lasted to 1 month old she would likely live her whole life without complications. She was a fighter then and is again fighting today.
On December 5th of 2021, Winnie had her first seizure. Anyone who knows someone or an animal who has them knows they are horrifying. We worked with our vet through a few more seizures to find a mixture of medicines until January 2022 to what we thought was finally being able to control them. Winnie has taken 2 medicines 3 times a day and has not had a seizure for 1 and half years up until this point.
This past Wednesday night we were woken to this nightmare again. Winnie had 10+ seizures before we were able to get her to an emergency room. She stayed in the ICU that day for a 24 hour watch and we were told she did not have another seizure. We were elated to bring her home Thursday afternoon with a higher dose of medicine prescribed, with a third medicine added on. Thursday at 5PM while at home, the seizures began again. She had 4 at home and at least 1 at the hospital that we know of so far.
Both of our emergency room visits and 24 hour ICU watches have already been in the thousands. Even though I pay for pet insurance, none will cover her preexisting condition of seizures. We have some options of brain scan MRIs, but we were given an estimate of $3-5 thousand, with possible procedures after being even more. While we are praying the latest ICU stay can get her regulated with medicine and stable, I am financially running out of options of even bringing her back to the hospital another time if it is needed. This fund is a last ditch effort to give Winnie whatever we can to give her a chance at the normal life she has lived for the past nine years. I know she can still have so many years ahead of her and would feel terrible about myself if I didn’t try everything possible for her.
