My mom is a prime example of how our government fails those who need help.
She had her electricity turned off on Monday because the bill got too high ($4,146.11). She lives in a house passed down through her family. It’s not well insulated so basic comforts like heat and air conditioning end up costing a fortune even when trying to keep the cost low. She pays the portion of the bill she can afford each month, hoping they’ll keep it on for her.
What hurts most, is that she needs electricity for her nebulizer so that she can take her medication each day. Her doctor’s office could sign paperwork to make it mandatory for the electric company to keep it on, but they won’t because too many people abused the system and so now she suffers.
Her running water comes from a well which is run by a pump… which is run by electricity. She doesn’t even have running water.
If she pays her bill in full, the electric company will turn on her electric again, but she’ll also be able to be put on a government program that will help her with the bill each month. BUT they won’t help her until she pays the delinquent bill; an unsurmountable obstacle for her.
I’m reaching out because she needs help. My mom works her fingers to the bone each day doing odd jobs, delivering papers, and collecting scrap metal for money. She worries if she made too much money each month for food stamps even though she barely makes enough to feed herself.
It’s killing me because I can’t help her. She lives in Pennsylvania and I go to grad school in Texas hoping that I’ll have a good enough job to take care of her when I’m done.
And through it all, she manages to keep a positive attitude. I asked her, “Hey momma, I’m worried about you. How are you doing with out electricity?”
She said, “I’m ok. It’s just like camping!”
Please help if you can.
My mom is not the type of person to take advantage of government systems. I had to beg her for months to apply for food stamps. She would give anyone anything she had if it made that person's day a little bit better.
I know that there are bigger problems out there in the world, but this is a big problem in our world. We would be so thankful for any amount you were able to give or just for reading our story.
Our monetary goal is exactly the bill and nothing more. GoFund Me charges a 7.9% fee so that has been added to the goal.
All money will go towards getting her electricity back on and any extras will go towards groceries.
