Giving my daughter Hannah Smith, 19 year old hope and a new beginning. I am reaching out because I need help to help me help her. Reaching out and asking anybody is NOT easy for me to do and there was a lot of debate when a gofundme should or should be done and when... Guess today is the best day. Based on the attorneys guidance and as they will try and recoup any funds they can on her behalf (which I believe will not be much due to the at fault insurance policy was low as well as the expensive hospital bills that Hannah’s insurance has rights to the claim) I am sponsoring this Go Fund me on her behalf.
On 16 September 2018 late afternoon Hannah was in a very bad pedestrian car accident in Columbus Ohio where the other driver was cited with a failure to maintain. What brought Hannah to this day was her boyfriend’s friend had called them asking for help because he was broken down on the side of the highway. Hannah and her boyfriend off to the rescue. Hannah’s car was directly behind the friend’s car on the berm located 270-70 interchange. While one friend was sitting in the front seat of his car her boyfriend was standing beside the broken down car she was standing between the cars looking in the trunk for oil…. when all the sudden she was on the ground and was yelling for help and her boyfriend was thrown in the grass. The truck had ran off the road into the berm failing to maintain while smashing my daughters car which crushed her into the boyfriend friends car.

She had been crushed between the two cars, with over 17 fractures crushing her lower legs the spending several days in critical care. Her boyfriend luckily was in critical care but shortly sent home. Since this horrific accident she has had over 10 surgeries and was in 4 different hospitals for an 87night stay. Her injuries and procedures include: Left lower leg tib/fib fracture were fractured and she loss 70% of muscle and tissue with a complete degloving of her lower left leg. She underwent orthopedic surgery to add hardware and multiple debridement procedures also multiple plastic surgery procedures with skin grafting using her thighs as donor sites. Her lower right leg had tib/fib fracture fractures that were more severe than her left leg, she loss 30% muscle and tissue and needed a fasciotomy due to the swelling and tension and she also underwent multiple debridement procedures also multiple plastic surgery procedures with skin grafting using her thighs as donor sites. During all the procedures she also received over 12 blood transfusions. Within days at the first hospital she had developed pulmonary embolism and an IVC filer was immediately placed in her along with a blood thinner that a couple days later she had a reaction as her immune system formed antibodies against the blood thinner heparin that she was on. Days of just lying in a bed her ankles and feet have lost range of motion due to unable add boots or braces due to the injuries. She now has foot drop and lost all if not most nerves in both lower legs and they may or not regenerate self. Months after the incident she began to take steps and now progressed to using a 4 point cane to assist in walking short distances and a wheelchair for longer distances. Since being released from the hospital to date we have not been successful with getting a psychiatrist or therapist with in our insurance network that is accepting new patients or that is local for treatment. Hannah is currently undergoing laser treatments and will start wearing AFO’s to assist in her healing progress that insurance has denied paying. Due to the doctor saying that she will gain 50% more mobility and a 75% decrease in her pain…. we as her parents felt that it was imperative for her to go through this treatment plan to include rigorous physical therapy twice a week at 2hr sessions.

My daughter is a survivor of a pedestrian car accident with the future looking grim with the lifelong injuries with the pain, anger, depression and PTSD. With the at fault insurance policy limit being low, Hannah’s loss of wages and potential, her medical expenses and co-pays, the daily pain and suffering, her loss of body function, the disfigurement of her lower legs.

Furthermore, the accident has also impacted her ability to work and live independently. Due to the incident with her injuries she has had to move home with us leaving her boyfriend in Ohio while losing the apartment and her car and she is feeling like she has lost all ability to be independent.
Anyone knowing Hannah, they know she does not want to be dependent or told what to do and wants to have her own to make her own way.
I believe after her treatments she will be ready to begin again but it will look different as mom I’m not confident that she will be able to work in places she did before due to the daily physical impacts and strains.

These funds and donations collected will be in support of: lost income so she has independence, fund a new apt/home when she’s ready to leave our home and help for the future medical co-pays to include medicines.
