MICHAEL THOMAS ZIEGLER MEMORIAL FUND
On Wednesday, December 30, 2015, 1LT MICHAEL THOMAS ZIEGLER passed away in the loving arms of his family after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer. Michael is the beloved son of Barbara and Mark Ziegler, brother to Mark, Lauren, Ashley, Matthew, Melissa, Gregory and Carolyn, and cherished nephew of Nancy Patchan. Michael was a graduate of the United States Military Academy, Class of 2013.
During the spring of 2014, while completing pre-Ranger training at Fort Benning, Georgia, Michael became seriously ill. A MRI revealed a large mass inside the frontal lobe of his brain, and Michael was diagnosed with a highly aggressive form of brain cancer known as Glioblastoma Multiforme. Michael returned home to receive medical treatment at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center with the strong love and support of his family.
Everyone who knew Michael as a student at Westfield High School, a cadet at the United States Military Academy, and as a soldier in the United States Army, can attest to Michael’s love and concern for others. Throughout Michael’s brief life, his contributions to help others in his school, his community, and his country clearly demonstrated his deep commitment to help others.
The Ziegler family wishes to establish a scholarship fund at Westfield High School for Michael Thomas Ziegler as a living memorial in honor of his strong commitment towards selfless service. We hope to continue Michael’s legacy through supporting those who also aspire to serve others, and who truly embodies Michael’s strong commitment to Duty, Honor, and Country.
