Support A Smile

My name is Amy Rosario and I hold a secret behind my face mask, I don’t smile.

I am a happy single mom of toddler twins. I am a happy full time college student. I am a happy responsible member of society. Yet I don’t smile.

Why you ask? Because I am afraid to. I am afraid of being judged by people who see my teeth. I have lost almost all my top teeth along with several missing on the bottom and those that are left have been ground down.

About 4 years ago during my pregnancy with the twins, my teeth started breaking down despite taking good care of them. I brushed and flossed and still they were crumbling away like dry toast. The best answer I got from any dentist I went to was, “sometimes it just happens.”

I have reached out to Medicaid for help but the only solution they cover is to wear partial or full dentures and due to  a severe gag reflex when anything touches the roof of my mouth or the back of my tongue, I am only left with few options that unfortunately, my health insurance will not cover. After attending an intake at Gentle Dental in Worcester, MA I was briefly given a few very expensive options: implants and the possibility of a partial bridge. For just two implants the procedure will cost $10,000. I need at least 5 implants.

Getting my teeth fixed is important to me because a better smile will give me better career opportunities because let's face it, appearances do matter when representing a company. My communication will sound a lot better since at this moment I can’t pronounce certain words with S or F which leaves me sounding like I have a lisp and I am often asked to repeat what I say.

One last important reason I need my teeth fixed is self-confidence. Right now, I never have an open mouth smile and unless I have a mask, on I don’t open my mouth to talk much nor do I look people in the eye when conversing.

I have achieved so much, even when the odds have been stacked against me. I was an addict for 13 years. I faced homelessness and lost every ounce of dignity I had. When I became pregnant with the twins I was given an opportunity to change my life so that I could give my girls a happy childhood and a better life. I took that opportunity and ran with it and I’ve been working on the new me since January 2017.

Since then I became a single mother with family support out of state. I worked hard to get us a home, a car, and become an active and responsible member of society helping others fight their addiction. I am a full time college student in my second semester working toward a degree in human services with a focus on substance abuse and an interest in learning mindfulness and cognitive behavioral therapy.

I plan on dedicating my life to help those in need and now, I am reaching out for your support in helping me fix my smile.
