Huxley Hafner's Brave New World

Huxley is the 8-month-old daughter of Barrett Hafner and Katy Meegan. This fundraiser is to help cover the cost of personal care attendants for day and night, and other medical therapy not covered by insurance. They are facing the great unknown of how much Huxley will recover from traumatic brain injury of unknown origin. She was a normal healthy and happy child during her first 7 months, and then suddenly she wasn't.

On January 16th, while enjoying a visit from grandparents from Minnesota, mom and dad noticed something wrong with her facial expressions and a gradual weakening of her head and neck. She was brought to Sanford Pediatric hospital, first to the ER and then back the same evening when her condition worsened. There she was immediately admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). She was scrutinized with several diagnoses and sedated for an MRI and a spinal after which she fell into a coma that lasted over a week. She was intubated to provide breathing support, and given a nasal feeding tube. She's lost the ability to feed or swallow, and can't support her head, reverting to the physical status of a 2-month-old.
A more detailed record of her medical journey can be found on her Caring Bridge site, Huxley Hafner Caring Bridge

After spending a month in the hospital with excellent care, she has been sent home with her parents, needing intensive round-the-clock care. They are dealing with several ongoing medical issues. The baby is being fed breast milk by a machine connected to a nasogastric tube feed. Katy is pumping every two hours to maintain the supply, day and night. They have been unable to work while taking care of Huxley. Much time is spent moving through the paperwork process seeking certification for financial support from the state and their insurance company. Repeated trips for appointments back to the hospital for more testing and various therapies have left them stressed and stretched to the limit. This is despite a great network of friends in Portland who have surrounded them with help with meals, grocery shopping, trips to the pharmacy, and basic household tasks.

The doctors at Sanford Pediatric hospital have been diligent in trying to give them a diagnosis of what happened, and more importantly what can be done to make Huxley more comfortable. The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN has acted as a second opinion and sounding board and they have confirmed everything that has been done for Huxley matched their own opinion. They will continue to receive and review her medical records.

Now the bills are arriving, deductibles maxed out instantly, and any needed home care expenses must be paid out of pocket. Both Katy and Barrett's employers are supportive of the time off to care for Huxley. There is no clear path for the future. The primary use of this GoFundMe is to allow for the hiring of medically trained personal care attendants for daytime and nighttime help.
