Huruma Orphanage in Tanzania
While on Spring break in Arusha, Tanzania recently, my friends and I had the honor of visiting Huruma Orphanage Centre for children who have lost parents to HIV/AIDS. At first, I wasn't sure if I wanted to do this because I felt like I would spend most of my time crying as I mingled with the children. When the manager of the hotel that we were staying at suggested that we take food and supplies to the orphanage I became quite excited. Sirmantha, Ebony and I went to the store and purchased sugar, rice, oil, juice, and notebooks for school. There are many orphanages in Tanzania, but not all receive support and this was one that didn't. The orphanage is run by a woman and man who have devoted their lives to taking care of these children without pay. They were so excited to receive the items that we purchased and extremely grateful.
I am so grateful to God that we were able to do this. We spoke to them about their needs and were told that their most urgent need was water. They are able to harvest rain water, but if there was no rain, it's very difficult due to the cost. I ended up giving them all the remaining shillings I had on me, $100,000, (approx. $48 USD) which would provide water for 2 weeks. I can not tell you how excited my friends and I were to be able to provide for some of their basic needs.
Currently, this orphanage has 18 children, 9 boys, and 9 girls. I was very moved by this experience, and hope I'll be able to get family and friends to join me in this venture! We are so blessed, and it takes so little to make a difference in the lives of these children. The funding goal for this campaign is $3600- enough to purchase water for this orphanage for 3 years or other items that are needed to care for these children.
Please give what you can and be a blessing to these children and the amazing couple devoted to them.
God bless you all.
Sincerely,
McKeeta Allen
