Liebe Freunde!

Mein Name ist Antonia Brunnader-Bramwell, ich lebe in Weiz, Österreich, und gemeinsam mit meinem Mann Rickoy Bramwell unterstütze ich seine Familie und die Community in Burnt Savanna.

Wie einige von euch wissen, stehen Rickoy Familie und die Community in Burnt Savanna, Jamaika, nach dem verheerenden Hurricane vor einer humanitären Katastrophe.

Für Jamaika sind Hurricanes nichts neues - doch dieser war der erste, der als Kategorie 5 mit fast 300 km/h auf Land traf. Wie viele andere Orte im Südwesten Jamaikas wurde Burnt Savanna schwer beschädigt. Häuser sind ohne Dächer, Schulen und Krankenhäuser zerstört, und Kinder schlafen auf dem Boden – im wahrsten Sinne ohne Dach über dem Kopf.

Die Community ist nach wie vor schwer zugänglich: Es gibt kein Trinkwasser, keinen Strom und kaum Zugang zu Lebensmitteln. Stehende Gewässer erhöhen das Risiko für Infektionskrankheiten und durch Stechmücken übertragene Krankheiten.

Um den Menschen vor Ort und Rickoys Familie schnell und gezielt zu helfen, sammeln wir Gelder für:

Rickoy und ich haben uns bewusst dazu entschieden, nicht die offizielle Spendenseite der jamaikanischen Regierung zu nutzen. Diese ist zwar gut und sinnvoll, aber für Spender:innen aus Österreich über den Bankweg extrem aufwändig und teuer – die Gebühren stehen oft in keinem Verhältnis zu den Beträgen, die tatsächlich ankommen würden.

Stattdessen wird ein Teil des Geldes direkt per Western Union verschickt, wo die Gebühren wesentlich geringer sind und jede Spende schnell dort ankommt, wo sie am dringendsten gebraucht wird. Dieses Geld wird direkt vor Ort von Rickoys Brüdern Gladstone und Crispin verwaltet, die am besten einschätzen können, was aktuell am dringendsten gebraucht wird. Wir werden transparent sein und regelmäßig Updates geben, damit ihr seht, wie eure Spenden eingesetzt werden.

Im Jänner werden wir selbst nach Burnt Savanna reisen, dokumentieren, was bereits erreicht wurde, und prüfen, wo weiterhin dringender Bedarf besteht. Hier wird der zweite Teil des Geldes direkt von Rickoy und mir verwaltet.

Alle Ausgaben werden dokumentiert, und wir werden Fotos und kurze Berichte teilen, sobald die Spenden dort angekommen sind.

Die Menschen in Jamaika tragen die Folgen einer Katastrophe, die sie nicht verursacht haben – die Klimakrise trifft vor allem jene, die ohnehin schon wenig haben. Wir in Österreich haben wir die Möglichkeit zu helfen.

Dear friends,

My name is Antonia Brunnader-Bramwell, I live in Weiz, Austria, and together with my partner Rickoy Bramwell I am supporting his family and the community in Burnt Savanna.

As some of you may know, Rickoy's family and the community of Burnt Savanna, Jamaica, are facing a humanitarian crisis after the devastating hurricane.

Hurricanes are nothing new to Jamaica – but this was the first to make landfall as a Category 5 storm, with winds of nearly 300 km/h. Like many other places in southwestern Jamaica, Burnt Savanna was hit hard. Homes lost their roofs, schools and hospitals were destroyed, and children are sleeping on the ground – quite literally without a roof over their heads.

The community remains difficult to access: there is no drinking water, no electricity, and little access to food. Standing water increases the risk of infections and mosquito-borne diseases.

To support the people in Burnt Savanna and Rickoy’s family directly and effectively, we are collecting funds for:

Rickoy and I have deliberately chosen not to use the official donation platform of the Jamaican government. While it is a good and trustworthy initiative, donations from Austria via bank transfer are extremely complicated and expensive – the fees are often disproportionate to the actual donation amount.

Instead, part of the funds will be sent directly via Western Union, where the fees are much lower and every donation reaches those in need much faster. This portion of the money will be managed locally by Rickoy’s brothers, Gladstone and Crispin, who best understand what is most urgently needed at the moment.

We are committed to being transparent and will provide regular updates so you can see how your donations are being used.

In January, we will travel to Burnt Savanna ourselves to document what has been achieved and assess where further help is needed. The second portion of the funds will then be managed directly by Rickoy and me on site.

All expenses will be documented, and we will share photos and short reports as soon as the donations have arrived and been distributed.

The people of Jamaica are bearing the consequences of a disaster they did not cause – the climate crisis hits hardest those who already have the least. We in Austria have the privilege and the means to help.
