HURRICANE FLORENCE RECOVERY and ASSISTANCE
FEMA ves us some very sad news, "We do not help churches." HURRICANE Florence has devastated our church and our community. Pastor Tim Houska says, "It has been three weeks and people are just now returning to the devastation of our city, Wilmington. It is unbelievable the devastation in Wilmington. I have lived here since 99, and this is the worst I have ever experienced. People are so displaced and overwhelmed and so is our ministry, Upper Room Praise and Worship Center. Our building is in shambles! For many years we have been able to feed those in our community from our food bank, in addition to feeding (Spiritual food) to those attending our church services. We can't do either! I have never felt so helpless!"
We are asking for your help. As many know on September 14, 2018, Hurricane Florence made landfall with heavy winds and torrential rains that inundated the coastal city of Wilmington, NC for three days. We have never seen inland flooding in North Carolina like this. More than 30 (higher now) people have died and currently more than 20,000 have been displaced.
Pastor Tim Houska tells us, "We currently cannot assist our community. The damages to our building because of the high winds and the torrential rains, for three days, absolutely pulverized our historic church in Sunset Park, 5 miles from the beaches in Wilmington, NC. We had pumps in place yet our 6500 sq. ft. basement was flooded with 5 ft. of water ruining everything for our food bank ministry. The winds blew square window panes out of place and entire windows broken and shattered by the high winds in our sanctuary, office areas, and the bell tower where our historic bell (circa 80 years) hangs. Our very large 11,000 sq. ft. roof was majorly devastated being shredded like ribbons under the rains and winds of Hurricane Florence for three days without any relief in sight. With the major roof damage to our building, the ceiling and walls were and are being ruined even now as it rains, the ceilings and sheetrock throughout the building are crumbling and falling all over. Our ceilings and walls have major damage throughout the many rooms in the building. The winds were so powerful and the rains so hard that the paint was actually blown off of the woodwork, outside the building and belltower. Just unbelievable. We are without the means for the first time ever and I hate feeling so helpless. We are without any kind of insurance. The cost of insurance for this building is so expensive we just could not afford it."
