"Don't talk, ACT. Don't say, SHOW. Don't promise, PROVE."
Our hearts are heavy. The news about the devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian continues to be awful. The Category 4 hurricane has hovered over the Bahamas for two days, pummeling the islands, shredding roofs, homes and anything in its deadly path. We have family members, friends, and colleagues who are all being devastated by the 150 mph winds and the storm surge of 18 to 23 feet! We must reach out and help! The International Black Women's Public Policy Institute (IBWPPI)
is set to do our part now by continuing the humanitarian work we began there almost 5 years ago. With the help of board members living in the Bahamas, we will turn our immediate efforts to the massive emergency needs. With the help of our friends on the ground, we have identified a critical list of items we wish to get to 200 families who have lost everything except their lives.
Our goal is to support 200 families in critical need. IBWPPI intends to purchase and ship 200 pairs of much-needed work and rain-boots with socks along with toiletries care packages to the Bahamas as soon as possible. These boots will be distributed to women, men, and children and will help prevent waterborne diseases that can cause other major health problems. We did this with our partner in Haïti for Hurricane Matthew in 2016. We know this kind of help is needed, works and save lives!
IBWPPI has taken the lead in connecting with local agencies and organizations on the ground to receive and distribute the boots and care package donations directly to community leaders and local volunteers. In the coming days, we will keep you updated on our progress through our Facebook page and on the IBWPPI website.
Phase 1: Immediate needs: Providing 200 boots/socks and toiletries care packages.
Phase 2: Restoration: Providing financial support for families to get back on their feet.
We created this GoFundMe page to raise funds to purchase the items we have described above and ship them as soon as possible. We estimate purchases and shipment for 200 families to cost approximately $10,000. This is an average of $50 per family. This is only a beginning. Our goal is two shipments to start. We want to begin now and continue this effort for the months to come. Many will still be in need once Hurricane Dorian moves on.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
1. Give what you can because every little bit helps and will go a long way.
2. Share this link: IBWPPI Hurricane Dorian Relief Response
and ask your family, friends, and co-workers to give.
We need your help today! All donations for this effort will go directly to purchasing the items needed and shipping to the Bahamas. We do not have a large staff or administration costs; therefore, your contribution will go directly to the people who need it the most with immediacy. We ask that you help with this first round of funding by donating whatever you can towards our goal. We will be forever grateful! Once the support is underway, we will provide updates to everyone.
Thank you and may God bless you!
