Hurricane Relief for Chajulense
We are just beginning to understand the devastating impact hurricane Eta and Iota are having on Cooperative Coffees friends and producer partners in Central America. Lives have been lost and people have been displaced. Flooding and landslides have destroyed infrastructure and damaged coffee and other crops on the farm. It will take months to rebuild, all under the context of a COVID pandemic.
Asociación Chajulense located in Ixil Triangle, Quiché Department, Guatemala has seen heavy rains. Rivers continue to rise, while people are dealing with flooding, collapsed roads and bridges, and other critical infrastructure. Contact still has not been established with over 500 members.
In the village of Chel, the Chel river has overflowed its banks, washing away the main bridge connecting communities further down the road. In the town of Chajul, some homes have been evacuated for danger of being washed away. Nebaj and Cotzal are being hit by landslides which are affecting roadways.
