Hurricane "Otis" victims in Acapulco

Hello I'm Daniela,

As you may know by now, Acapulco was destroyed by category 5 hurricane “Otis”. I was born and raised in Acapulco, my entire family resides there and they survived the destruction.

I have no words to describe how unbelievably lucky they are to be alive. Glasses and objects flying everywhere, winds strong enough to flip trucks and cars. Someone described it as a “two hour long earthquake plus tornado winds and rain”. My aunt was sleeping in a room where the wind ripped the roof and she covered her head only with a pillow. Later she managed to hide under the bed and spent at least 4 hours waiting for the storm to dissipate. She did get a minor cut on her forehead from one of these glass projectiles.

Yesterday when I managed to arrive at Acapulco and hugged my mom, she told me “I didn’t think I’d see you again”. My mom and dad hid in a bathroom with our dogs, they hugged and prayed for the hurricane to pass.

I have family near Acapulco that will deliver food and water in the weeks ahead. I took groceries that will help them get through at least a week. The government is doing very little for residents, they’re receiving donations from all across Mexico but these are not being delivered to the people in need. I saw people all along the highway with signs that read “we need food and water”. Most of those that are getting groceries are those who have relatives outside Acapulco delivering them personally.

I’m creating this GoFundMe not for my mother and father who are now safe at my sister’s home outside Acapulco but for families Ramirez Cuenca and Torreblanca Sandoval that are my aunts and will need economic support. They lost everything, right now they’re staying at our house.

In our home all the glass windows are broken, the second floor suffered more damage. Our mattresses got wet, my dad’s couch flew away and landed on my neighbour’s roof (I’ll attach a picture), one of the doors outside was ripped and also landed next to that loveseat, all of my parent’s items are gone. But I’m confident it’s something my sister and I can take care of.

My aunts have no roof over their heads, no furnitures or electronics and all their personal belongings are gone. Their main source of income comes from tourism and as you know, it will take months if not years to have some stability back.

I would also like to be very clear; right now there’s not a single store in Acapulco, you cannot withdraw money from ATM’s and there’s literally no material available to replace/rebuild a home. But one priority is to make ATM’s available ASAP because gas and other items can be sold (in cash). I want to give these families a bit of comfort knowing they will have funds to be used.

This is the first time I’m doing this and hopefully the last. I would not be doing it if I didn’t think it was necessary. It took me a day to get to Acapulco thinking I was mentally “prepared” but nothing can’t describe the things I saw, those apocalyptic movies now feel too real.

I’m hurt, my most beloved ones live there and it pains me to see them going through this. I wish I could be the one providing all the help but I can’t do it alone. If there’s anything you can help with, please do it. The minimum amount will be of great help.

Como ya sabrán, Acapulco fue destruido por el huracán de categoría 5 "Otis". Nací y crecí en Acapulco, toda mi familia reside allí y sobrevivieron a la destrucción.

No tengo palabras para describir lo increíblemente afortunados que son de estar vivos. Vidrios y objetos volando por todas partes, vientos tan fuertes como para voltear camiones y coches. Alguien describió a este fenómeno natural como "un terremoto de dos horas más vientos de tornado y lluvia". Mi tía estaba durmiendo en una habitación donde el viento arrancó el techo y se cubrió la cabeza sólo con una almohada. Después consiguió esconderse debajo de la cama y pasó al menos 4 horas esperando a que se disipara la tormenta. Se hizo un pequeño corte en la frente con uno de esos proyectiles de cristal.

Ayer cuando logré llegar a Acapulco y abracé a mi mamá, me dijo "no pensé que te volvería a ver". Mi mamá y mi papá se escondieron en un baño con nuestros perros, se abrazaron y rezaron para que pasara el huracán.

Tengo familia cerca de Acapulco que les entregarán comida y agua en las próximas semanas. Llevé víveres que les ayudarán a pasar al menos una semana. El gobierno está haciendo muy poco por los residentes, están recibiendo donaciones de todo México pero no se están entregando a la gente necesitada. Vi a gente a lo largo de la carretera con carteles que decían "necesitamos comida y agua". La mayoría de los que están recibiendo víveres son aquellos que tienen familiares fuera de Acapulco entregándolos personalmente.

Estoy creando este GoFundMe no para mi madre y mi padre que ahora están a salvo en casa de mi hermana en las afueras de Acapulco sino para las familias Ramírez Cuenca y Torreblanca Sandoval que son mis tías y necesitarán apoyo económico. Perdieron todo, ahorita se están quedando en nuestra casa.

En nuestra casa todos los vidrios de las ventanas están rotos, el segundo piso sufrió más daños. Nuestros colchones se mojaron, el sofá de mi papá salió volando y aterrizó en el techo de mi vecino, una de las puertas de afuera se rasgó y también aterrizó junto a ese sofá, todos los objetos de mis padres desaparecieron. Pero confío en que sea algo de lo que mi hermana y yo podamos encargarnos.

Mis tías se han quedado sin techo, sin muebles ni aparatos electrónicos, y todos sus objetos personales han desaparecido. Su principal fuente de ingresos proviene del turismo y, como saben, tardarán meses si no años en recuperar cierta estabilidad.

También me gustaría ser muy clara; ahora mismo no hay ni una sola tienda en Acapulco, no se puede sacar dinero de los cajeros automáticos y literalmente no hay material disponible para reemplazar/reconstruir una casa. Pero una prioridad es que haya cajeros automáticos lo antes posible para poder vender gasolina y otros artículos (en efectivo). Quiero dar a estas familias un poco de consuelo sabiendo que dispondrán de fondos.

Es la primera vez que lo hago esto y espero que sea la última. No lo estaría haciendo si no creyera que es necesario. Tardé un día en llegar a Acapulco pensando que estaba mentalmente "preparada" pero nada puede describir las cosas que vi, esas películas apocalípticas ahora se sienten demasiado reales.

Estoy dolida, mis seres más queridos viven allá y me duele verlos pasar por esto. Ojalá pudiera ser yo la que prestara toda la ayuda pero no puedo hacerlo sola. Si hay algo en lo que puedas ayudar, por favor hazlo. La mínima cantidad será de gran ayuda.
