Hurricane Melissa has been absolutely devastating to our motherland Jamaica. The death toll continues to rise, much of the island remains without power and running water, people remain isolated while emergency teams attempt to clear roads, and there has been catastrophic damage to infrastructure across the island.
I'm Kelsey Adams and a majority of my family lives in Westmoreland, one of the parishes worst hit by Hurricane Melissa . We didn't hear from them for 60 hours after Melissa hit, and once we got in touch we heard harrowing stories of how they assumed they would die in the storm. Thankfully, everyone has survived but our homes have been severely damaged. My mother and aunt's house is currently sheltering 20 people from around the community who are now essentially homeless because their homes have been destroyed. My grandmother's home experienced severe flooding after the shingles of her roof were ripped off by the 185 mph winds. They all have no power and no water.
We are raising funds to help restore their homes: replacing blown out windows and doors, repairing roofs, dealing with water damage and potential mold infestations, replacing ruined furniture, sofas, beds, etc. and to help them get back on their feet. It seems like it will take months for Jamaica to recover from this, and we in Canada want to help as much as we can from afar.
We're anticipating repair costs for each house will be around $10,00 to $15,000 CAD, for a total goal of $25,000.
Any excess funds will go to the wider Westmoreland community and relief efforts.
Any help is welcome, even if it's just sharing this GoFundMe. It would mean the world to me and my family during this heartbreaking time.
