Hi, my name is Crystal and I am from Somerton, St. James, Montego Bay, Jamaica. I’m reaching out on behalf of my community in Somerton, which has been devastated by the category five Hurricane Melissa.

The hurricane swept through our rural area and destroyed almost everything, homes, farms, livestock, and the small businesses that many families depended on to survive. Many residents lost their goats, cows, chickens, and crops their only means of income and food. Now, with no livelihood left and prices for basic food and supplies tripling, every day has become a struggle just to find enough to eat.

To make matters worse, Somerton is currently cut off from the rest of the city due to landslides, fallen trees, and damaged roads. Transportation is extremely limited, and many individuals must walk long distances to reach other areas in search of food, water, and essential supplies.

Despite this devastation, the people of Somerton have come together, sharing what little they have to help one another through this crisis. But our community’s resources are quickly running out, and we urgently need help to recover and rebuild.

How the funds will be used:

All donations will go directly toward supporting the people of Somerton, St. James, to:

Provide emergency food and clean water for families who have lost everything

Supply essential items such as clothing, hygiene kits, and cooking fuel

Assist with temporary shelter for those whose homes were destroyed

Rebuild homes, small farms, and local livelihoods so families can regain independence and stability

The people of Somerton are proud, hardworking, and resilient. Even in the face of disaster, they continue to care for one another with love and strength. With your help, we can restore hope and rebuild the lives of those who have lost so much.
