Fifteen years ago, my home and community was destroyed when Calcasieu Parish took a direct hit from Hurricane Rita. After years of rebuilding, we were finally able to gain a sense of normalcy. On August 26, 2020, my home and community was ravaged when we took a direct hit from Hurricane Laura. Nothing could have prepared me for the devastation inflicted on my family and community. I am grateful that my home was not knocked off of it's piers and is still standing. Unfortunately, my immediate family was not as lucky.  Even though my home is still physically standing, I lost everything I own. 

The devastation caused by Hurricane Laura is only magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to Hurricane Laura, I was furloughed twice in March and July from the same job. Due to being unemployed, I did not have insurance to cover replacing my possessions nor do I have the funds to  provide  lodging and food for my family. Hurricane Laura removed half of my roof and shattered multiple windows.  Wind and water damaged has made my house uninhabitable and left my family with only the clothes on our backs. 

Funds will be used to assist with lodging, food, travel, and items to replace my families furnishing.  With the devastation to our community, there is no way of knowing,  what the future holds. Pictures do not fully grasp the devastation caused by a Category 4 Hurricane.  Currently, I am in Houston and unable to get assistance in this state at this time.
