Hurricane Ida Relief for Star & Joey
Due to the tragic events of hurricane Ida, my best friend Star and her wonderful husband Joey lost everything as their home was severely flooded. The funds raised will be put towards supplies for their baby such as bottles, food, and diapers, as well as hotel lodging for the next 5 days which is costing them over $2,000. Unfortunately, the hotel is not offering any special pricing for those in need. Sadly they just found out that their insurance is only going to pay for $5000 worth of damages which is estimated to be at over $30,000. They need new appliances, new furniture and all of their clothing including the babies clothing has been washed away. They are one income family and are in desperate need of assistance.
Here is their story
“On September 1 we had just put the baby to bed. I was working on a shirt for my Uncle as a gift after finding out he's finally about to become a #GrandpaBernie. I was trying to settle down to rest when water started coming into the apt. Joey was a week post op from total knee replacement and in a lot of pain.
Assuming we were getting an inch of water, I was in the process of packing up a few things when the wall in my office collapsed by the pressure of the water and water rushed in 5ft.
Joey was trapped as my desk rushed towards him (My desk that was built into the wall and bolted), I don't know how he got it but I won't ever forget my screams. 2 calls to 911 to be told they couldn't help.
An hour later, FDNY came down our block with a hugh truck and set up a rescue plan for us. They helped us swim through the waist high water in the rain with no socks or shoes (we had no time to grab clothes before the water rushed).
They had to take my 83 y.o. mother in law by canoe and they got us to safety. I've never been so terrified. That was enough... the devastation of the house is a while other beast. Everything we had, all of our belongings, were downstairs and have destroyed. We lost everything.
We have been in touch with insurance but have no idea what’s going to be covered. At this time we are out of pocket for everything, including the hotel we need to stay in for the next week, and who knows how long.
Red Cross has been absolutely no help and has not offered assistance in any way.
