Hurricane Help for Cecile and Alvin
Donation protected
We’re sure that you’ve all seen on the news how badly Hurricane Michael’s devastation hit Florida and in particular, the communities of Panama City and Mexico City. You may not have known that our dear friend and classmate, Cecile Scoon, and her husband, Alvin Peters, suffered catastrophic damage to their Panama City home AND office from Hurricane Michael.
As the photo below demonstrates, it will take many, many thousands of dollars before they have a place to live or work again. This disaster comes at a particularly rough time for Cecile and Alvin. While she was dealing with all her father's paperwork after his death, Cecile let their own home insurance lapse, and although she called to reinstate it months before the storm, the insurance company is contesting her coverage.
At the same time, Cecile has put her law practice almost entirely on hold for the past year to devote her full-time efforts to the passage of Amendment 4 in November, which will end felon disenfranchisement in Florida. Florida has one of the strictest felon disenfranchisement laws in the country and successful passage of Amendment 4 will lead to 1.4 million Floridians regaining their right to vote. Cecile, characteristically, put their rights ahead of her own needs. Now she needs our help. Donations will go directly to Cecile's account to help her rebuild.
Please give what you can to assist Cecile and Alvin at this critical time. Thank you, Lisa & Jeanne (HR '81)
