Hurricane Helene, Meet Maureen.
Our mother lost her home on Friday, 9/27/24, when a massive tree fell upon it.
Mom was 3 years old when her parents built their home on this property, yet memories of her happy childhood remain vivid. Decades later, a fire tragically took her parent’s home and her father’s life. She inherited the property and raised her own family there in a modest ranch. As her children left the nest, she stayed in her house on her beloved land.
At 77 years old, Mom is still strong, independent, and working remotely for a healthcare business in Milford. She was finally planning to retire next month. Friday afternoon, she was in her home office tackling client billing and analyzing reports. When the power went out, she went to the living room and said a prayer that we would all be protected from the storm. Moments later, a massive tree crashed through the office roof across the length of the house, stopping inches above where she sat. There’s no question that a miracle occurred that day.
More than 100 people across our country lost their lives to Hurricane Helene. Mom’s home and belongings were destroyed, but we are overwhelmed with gratitude that she wasn’t harmed.
As a lifelong resident of Milford, Mom has consistently supported her community, helping with fundraising efforts that benefited our schools, charities, and anyone struggling with injury, illness, or loss. Her connection to Milford runs deep, and so Mom is determined to rebuild and live the rest of her years on the land that holds a lifetime of memories. To that end, we are hoping the community she’s loved and supported will help her realize that goal, because we know the power of faith and community can move mountains.
