My name is Sovi, a naturalized American stationed in Germany , proudly serving a country that has allowed me to fulfill my lifelong dream and provide a better life for my family in The Bahamas.
I'm affectionately known by my squadron as "Bahama Mama" since I grew up on the Island of Grand Bahama which experienced the longest sustained onslaught of a category 5 hurricane in recorded History .Dorian literally stopped and battered the island for 36 hours, taking lives and all sense of security.
My heart is lifted today by the tremendous outpouring of support by my American colleagues and citizens who have kept many of my friends and family back home alive by providing food , clothing and shelter . My brothers and sisters in the Marine Branch are literally lifting people out of catastrophic conditions, endangering their own lives in the spirit of service and good human decency .
My family home on Grand Bahama has been completely destroyed. The house literally knocked off its foundation. I am shook at the core knowing that my family is currently homeless. However , despite death and destruction , we are not hopeless because we have seen generosity immeasurable , living through and rebuilding after devastating hurricanes such as Andrew , Floyd , Francis and Jean in our lifetimes.
We thank you , encourage and need your prayers daily .
My mother , sister and her three children are in the process of moving to New Providence to live with relatives, they need your support to relocate , assist with school supplies and to help find a permanent home. My grandmother, great grandmother , aunts uncles , two siblings and countless cousins will remain on the island of Grand Bahama living in compromised housing trying to rebuild. Home is still where the heart is .
Although I am across the Atlantic, both my countries are near and dear to my heart . We fight for and love the same things. We both believe in the universal principal of being our brothers keeper .
