Hurley Douglas Buller

On Tuesday, February 23rd my best friend, Jacob Buller, along with his two brothers and mother lost their amazing father/husband, Doug. He passed away in California, from a clogged carotid artery, which led to bleeding in the brain.

Hurley Douglas Buller, known to most as Doug, was born in Encino, CA on August 9, 1958.  He grew up there with two younger brothers.  At age seventeen, before even finishing high school, he left home to join the United States Marine Corps.  He served four years at Seal Beach, CA.  Shortly after being discharged, he returned to school to get his GED and learned the trade of lath and carpentry.  On a seemingly insignificant day he walked into a local Denny’s diner where he met the most beautiful and special woman he had ever known .  On August 6, 1982 he married Yolanda Beatrice Buller.  In 1992, after ten years of marriage, they had their first child together.  In 1995 a second and in 1996 a third.  In the year 2000 with three young boys at home, he suffered a gunshot wound that passed through his arm and grazed his chest.  He was lucky to survive this incident.  In 2008 he was diagnosed with stage four cancer and received chemotherapy and radiation treatment.  He was told he would not survive.  Yet, he found a way, again, to persevere and beat the odds.  If life was a casino, he would have been asked to leave under suspicion of cheating.  In January of 2021 he had a minor stroke and decided to retire.  He passed away in February of 2021 after only three weeks of retirement.  The cause of death was ultimately attributed to complications related to the radiation he received as a cancer treatment thirteen years earlier.

On Friday, February 19th, Jacob and I were on our way to go hiking in Colorado when he got a call from his mother, saying Doug was not well.  We turned around and Jacob was on the next flight out of Denver to be with his father and family.

With the amount of sorrow that I have felt in the past week, I can’t even imagine the heartache that the Buller family has gone through and is still going through now. It really goes to show how short life is and you never know how much longer you have with a loved one.

I decided to make this GoFundMe to try and alleviate any financial stressors that the Buller family may be experiencing. Just knowing the type of person Jacob is, I know this family would never ask for handouts, which is why I wanted to do this for them.

If you would like to support the Buller family in another way, please check out his mother Bea's, Facebook & Etsy page below. She makes amazing gift baskets for all occasions:
