Hi friends, my name is Jen and I am unfortunately creating this gofundme for my best friend, Hunter. Hunter is an 11 year old pitt/lab mix, who has been with me through thick and thin.
After 6 months of fighting with a broken and unhealing toe nail, an x-ray confirmed there was a tumor. We moved forward assuming the tumor would likely be cancerous and had his pinky toe and part of his paw amputated. The cost of the surgery along with testing a random lump on a different leg, and histopathology cost approximately $2500. We opened a care credit card, which was maxed out pretty quickly with expensive pain meds, antibiotics, and daily bandage changes at our vet.
Unfortunately, his surgical site has had multiple infections and is not healing well at all. We have to bring him to our vet every single day for his paw to be cleaned, medicated, and have his bandage changed. This costs us $80 a day, every day, to drive 40 minutes each way to our vet.
We just received Hunter's histopathology results, which range from good, bad, and somewhere in between. The lump we assumed was just fatty tissue (but had tested just in case) turned out to be positive for a low grade malignant nerve sheath tumor. They are typically slow moving, but will return. As for the toe, we found out he has a rare case of symmetrical lupoid onychodystrophy, which is a form of dog lupus. It affects the nails and nail beds causing infections, tumors, and ulcers.
Both of these can be treatable and managed once we overcome the infection in his foot. His meds, special diet, vet visits, and our missed days at work are really adding up. If you have a few dollars to spare to go towards healing my best friend, it would truly mean the world to me and my partner Rick. Anything helps, a share, a like, a dollar. I appreciate any and all gestures.
