This is the amazing Hummer family. (Brent- dad, Shannon-mom, & 8 kids- ages 2-16 yrs. old)
Last week their daddy and husband was diagnosed with an extremely rare and aggressive form of cancer called, Mucinous Adenocarcinoma. This cancer attacks the body in various locations. Currently, Brent has a mass, growing around his bladder, and bowels. The cancer is also attacking his lymphatic system and it is believed his pulmonary system as well.
Despite this huge trial, this family does not feel sorry for themselves, and they do not want any of us to either. Just a few days ago, Shannon posted to Facebook; Hard is Good. She spoke of many other BIG trials her and Brent have experienced, including; infertility, children with special needs, moving many times, unemployment, and a baby with multiple heart defects. Shannon explained that thru these challenges their family has gained a greater appreciation for their children, because it was a challenge to get them here, that they have patience, because of the blessing of having children with special needs, that they have friends all over the country from their multiple moves, they are so grateful for Brent’s job, due to a period of unemployment, and they are so appreciative to Heavenly Father for modern day medicine, that saved their infant son’s life.
Shannon pleads with their friends and family to not feel sorry for them. They feel so blessed for their trials and the things they’ve been taught thru hard times. She says, “we do not have time for pity, doubt, or questioning of why God did this to us.” “We are saving our energy for faith, hope, and love. And for the gratitude of blessings and miracles that will come with this next big challenge.”
As friends, we have brainstormed ways to serve our Hummer Family. Yes, I call them ours, because that is how we feel about them. We have felt strongly that one way we can help, is to provide clothes, shoes, and backpacks for the kids to return to school with. This way the family can focus on spending time together, making memories, and focusing on each other.
