Humanitarian Support for Myanmar Earthquake Victims
Tax deductible
Today, on Friday, March 28, 2025, I woke up again to the news of yet another deadly crisis back home in Myanmar. A major earthquake of 7.7 mangitude had struck the country, leaving a trail of destruction and a high death toll. The earthquake's epicenter hit near Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city with a population of over 1.5 million. The earthquake was followed by a 6.4 magnitude aftershock just minutes later, leaving communities vulnerable and in panic.
At least 144 people have died in Myanmar according to the preliminary count of casualties. Modeling by the United States Geological Survey, an agency that measures and studies earthquakes, estimates that the fatalities could likely surpass 10,000.
This tragedy came at a time when our country and communities have already been ravaged by political turmoil and intensifying civil war since the 2021 military coup. Myanmar was already in a dire humanitarian crisis before today's earthquake, with over 3.5 million people displaced and more than 20 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. Recently, the cuts to USAID further intensified the crisis as lifeline support programs were cut off. Now, the communities are struggling to cope with the devastation of the earthquake, searching through the rubble for loved ones and flocking to overwhelmed hospitals for medical needs.
I am fundraising for Community Partners International (CPI) because they are a trusted organization that specializes in direct, community-led aid. In a country like Myanmar where the state infrastructure has crumbled and is prone to abuse, community organizations that have a proven track record of working with local partners are our best bet in getting assistance to the people on the ground. They know the terrain, the people, and the immediate needs. CPI has over 25 years of getting humanitarian assistance to Myanmar with an extensive network of local partners. By supporting CPI, I believe we can ensure that lifesaving humanitarian relief reaches those who need it most — swiftly and effectively.
Please help me in supporting Myanmar’s earthquake victims. Your support can make a real difference, and every dollar counts. Even a small contribution can bring lifesaving relief to families in need.
