Hugo W. Morales, a gifted artist and humanitarian needs our help. In early November he was hospitalized due to complications from Covid-19. For the past 110 days he has been confined to a hospital bed due to dangerously low levels of oxygen. Despite the hospitalization, for the most part he remained optimistic and hopeful of a full recovery and return to his life as Marcela’s husband, artist, adjunct professor and community service volunteer. Unfortunately, on February 13th his conditioned took a turn for the worse and the difficult decision was made by loved ones to have him intubated and placed on a ventilator. As Hugo and family prepare for the long journey ahead, we have created this Go Fund Me page to help cover for his medical care and related expenses.
Hugo studied, graduated, and worked at Jersey City State College/ New Jersey City University for nearly 30 years. During these decades of service he literally taught, mentored, and worked untiringly to support thousands of students. Described as a modern day renaissance man, he is a gifted visual artist who has had his artwork displayed locally, nationally and internationally. As an educator he worked as a social justice advocate for students and our community. As a cultural activist he was at the center of the Nuevo Latino art movement, and among his many accomplishments was creation of the Festival de los Andes, a festival held annually for 15 years honoring and highlighting the diverse cultures from the Andes region in South America. Most recently he has been an active Rotarian and serving the greater Hudson County region as a community volunteer. He has also reengaged as an educator, teaching graphic art design at Felician University, in preparing our next generation of visual artist.
This appeal is centered on love. If you know Hugo, you’ve seen his love for his wife, mother, brother, sister, nephews and nieces. If you know Hugo, you’ve felt his love as a student, mentee, colleague, and good friend. If you know Hugo, at some time in your life he has convinced you to get involved and volunteer, to give back to our community and to serve others. A uniquely humble man, who has made it his life’s mission to serve others with little regard for his own needs. The love he has shared merits your support.
In Hugo’s time as artist, educator, and community activist he has been generous in sharing his time and treasure in the service of others. We his friends and family are now asking for his friends to support him through this most challenging and difficult time. Over the coming days, a determination will be made on his continuing care, and undoubtedly there will be costs. We ask that you consider donating on his behalf if you’ve been blessed to have been one of his students, admirers of his artwork, a recipient of his community outreach or a friend.
