Hughie’s Medical Needs

Hughie Roy was born Tuesday, 6-13-23 at 7:59 a.m. in Hastings. He weighed 6 lbs 11 oz and was 20 in long. He couldn’t breathe correctly so he was taken to the NICU right away. First he had a collapsed lung and then they found out his airway was the size of a 25 week old fetus which wasn’t able to be detected by the many ultrasounds we had to have leading up to birth. They needed to intubate him right away and give him a feeding tube. They then flew him to Omaha Children’s Hospital the day he was born so that’s where we are right now. They gave him some steroids for at least 24 hours and just took out his breathing tube. So far he’s doing well without it and we hope he can keep it up. He’ll still have his feeding tube in for a little bit. The next step is to get him to be able to be on room air without a CPAP and then completely eating on his own. We’re not sure what caused the narrow airway but they’re guessing he swallowed too much amniotic fluid since the steroids seemed to work to bring down inflammation.
