Last Tuesday the family headed to Vancouver for Hugh's (2yr old) scheduled bowel reconstructive surgery, to take place on Wednesday. Nerves were high, as would be for any parents, whose child was undergoing a 6 hour surgery, but this was a fairly straight forward surgery and Hugh was strong. While the duration of surgery was longer than planned, there were no visible complications.
The days to follow, Hugh didn't make any progress. Something was evidently wrong. After a number of tests, scans and a constant dose of morphine, his heart rate spiked and he went in for emergency surgery late Sunday night. They found a leak in his colon to his pelvis and were able to clear it, but now his body is in a really weakened state, working to fight the infection that became septic.
He's since been admitted into Children's ICU and remains in a fragile state while being intubated. While the journey ahead will be a long one, they're remaining optimistic and taking it one day at a time.
If you know Ruth and Colin, you know they are the last people to ever accept help, but yet the first to offer. With everything going on, the last thing they need is the financial stress, as they are both no longer being paid at this point.
Let's see if we can pull together and help relieve this amazing family of some of their financial pressures ♡
