My diagnosis came on M's and my twenty first wedding anniversary and then that stupid failed surgery was the day before Thanksgiving, which put us right at the end of the year. Mark down one round of paying my personal deductible and meeting the out-of-pocket coinsurance maximum.
My treatment started on January seventeenth of this year and since the insurance clock reset on Jan first, we got to meet the deductible and and out-of-pocket max a second time since November. If that didn't add insult to injury quite enough, my employer changed Insurance carriers on March first.
Yup. We've had the honor of paying deductibles and meeting our out-of-pocket max *three* times in four months all the while dealing with the biggest crisis my family has had to face.
So many people have been so terrifically generous and you have helped tremendously with our handling the first round of bills and with much of the unpaid time off that M is fighting to get reimbursed (DCPS isn't allowing the donated days because she didn't take all of her time consecutively). I feel like a big heel standing up this GoFundMe; however, one of the hardest lessons for me to learn in life is when to ask for help and, well, it's time.
Our goal is $10,000 and that will make everything manageable. I have no expectation of meeting the entire amount; however, if we do and exceed it, any excess will be given to either a current cancer patient friend in need or to ROCSTART, Rallying for Oral Cancer Support Through ART a 501c3 based right here in Jacksonville, FL and run by none other than another oropharyngeal cancer surviver: Grease Rags Clothing's own Cindy Platt.
