Mark Woods — also known as Woodsy, Butch, or Woodman, has recently been diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), a progressive neurological disease that impacts mobility, speech, and independence. True to who he is, Woodsy is meeting this challenge with his typical optimism and determination, but the road ahead will bring significant emotional, physical and financial challenges.
For more than 30 years, Mark has called Colorado home, building a life grounded in family, friendship, and community. At the same time, he’s always stayed deeply connected to his roots in Montclair, NJ, the University of Vermont, and Upper Saranac Lake. Whether he’s skiing, biking, golfing, coaching, advising and caring for his clients, or simply showing up when someone needs him, Mark gives his full heart—every single time.
Raised in Montclair, alongside his two brothers, Mark grew up in a loving, tight-knit family. He was a standout lacrosse player from an early age, going on to play Division I lacrosse at UVM. But what truly defines Mark isn’t just his athletic ability—it’s his team-first mindset, his leadership, and the way he lifts up everyone around him.
Mark’s wife, Karen, and son, Evan, are by his side as he navigates what’s ahead and he is surrounded by people who care about him and support him. A group of friends and family has come together to organize help to ease some of the financial burden ahead. Funds raised will go directly toward critical needs, including home modifications, accessible transportation, and ongoing medical care such as specialists, therapy, and treatments not covered by insurance.
If you know Mark, you know he would never ask for help himself. He’s the one who shows up—your hype guy, the one who listens, who makes people feel truly seen, valued, and understood. There’s a rare authenticity and warmth about him that leaves a lasting impression, one that stays with you long after you’ve left his presence. Mark doesn’t just meet people—he makes an impact on them and always shows up for others.
Now it’s our turn to show up for him.
Please consider making a donation—no amount is too small—and sharing this page with your network means the world. Your support will directly help Mark and his family navigate the challenges ahead and remind them they are not alone in this fight.
With gratitude, Team Woodsy #20 Strong
