Hi and Hafa Adai, my name is Doreen and I'm creating this to raise funds for my son, Joseph (Joey), and our family to help cover costs associated with his upcoming craniotomy to remove a brain tumor.

My son, Joey, is a 36 year old avid waterman and project engineer who lives and works on the island of Saipan. He is a kind, caring, and loving person who is always there for his family and friends. He is a passionate waterman who enjoys surfing, fishing, and everything to do with the water.

On July 25, 2022, Joey suffered a seizure while he was at the gym while working out. Our local hospital on the island does not have an MRI machine so initial tests and diagnosis presented as a stroke. Joey was able to get an MRI performed on the island Guam for further testing in November 2022, but doctors were unable to determine what caused the seizure. Joey then headed off to Oahu for further testing in December 2022. While on Oahu, Joey performed another MRI and a week later he suffered his second seizure while we were about to have dinner. The following day, Joey received the unfortunate news over the phone with the neurologist stating that he had a tumor, which was the cause of the seizures.

This news was devastating to our family. We couldn't believe Joey had a tumor, but we are determined to tackle this head on. Joey's neurologist referred him to a neurosurgeon that recommended Joey perform a functional MRI to determine if the tumor was affecting the motor skills area of his brain due to the tumor's location. Fortunately, the functional MRI determined that the tumor was not affecting any of the motor skills area of the brain.

Joey's neurosurgeon told him that he needed surgery to remove the tumor. He referred Joey to Dr. Berger at UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco who will be performing the craniotomy and a special procedure called brain mapping to remove the tumor. After surgery Joey will be in San Francisco for about a month recovering and follow-up appointments until he gets the green light to fly back home to Saipan.
