Hubie the Cat Receive Life Saving Medication

Donation protected
Hello, my name is Aaron and I am raising funds to save the life of my beautiful, sweet kitty Hubie.

About a month ago my partner Courtney and I noticed that Hubie had taken a liking to licking strange things around the house (the element on our stove, my work boots, concrete if we took him outside on his harness, etc). Pretty odd, but he has a history of being a bit eccentric. Eventually we began to worry that he might be anemic so we booked him in for a check up at the vet.

Our vet ran some bloodwork, and the results were extremely concerning. He was sitting at a red blood cell count of only 10%. For some context, a normal red blood cell count for a cat is between 25-45%. We rushed him to the 24 hour pet hospital where he was admitted into the ER and received an emergency blood transfusion. That was enough to keep him alive, but his red blood cell count quickly plummeted again. In the past five days he had to receive three blood transfusions in total.

Throughout all of this, we didn't know what the cause of his anemia was and we were beginning to think we'd have to say goodbye to our sweet boy who is about to turn 2 years old this Halloween. Finally, after 4 nights in the hospital, the internal medicine specialist was able to diagnose him with Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP).

As recently as a couple of years ago FIP was a death sentence for an infected kitty, with most cats passing away within a few days or weeks of being diagnosed. However, in 2019 researchers at UC Davis studied a medication called GS-441524 that had a 81% success rate in curing FIP, but it was not released to market by the patent holders because of beaucratic red tape. Other peer reviewed research has shown the medication to have a 96.7% success rate! It seems to have immediately worked with Hubie. After his second blood transfusion, his red blood cell count dropped from 20% to 9% in about 10 hours. He received a shot of GS-441524 after his third blood transfusion and 8 hours later his red blood cell count was still at 25%! We really believe that with a full course of this treatment, he will be able to live a long, full life.

The bad news however, is that since the medicine isn't readily available, it isn't cheap. Hubie is going to need 84 consecutive days of treatment and each daily dose costs a little bit over $57. He will also need regular monthly bloodwork. Hubie's hospital stay has cost us over $10,000, which has cleared out our savings and maxed out our credit cards.

Our little buddy man means the world to us, and we will be eternally greatful for any support you would be willing to offer.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. Love you byebye ♥
