Cincinnati Public Schools and
New Taipei City, Taiwan, Student Exchange Program

The International Exchange Program was created by President Eisenhower in 1956, at a White House conference on citizen’s diplomacy, where he envisioned an organization that could be a champion for peace and prosperity by fostering bonds between people from different communities around the world.  By forming these relationships, President Eisenhower reasoned that people of different cultures could celebrate and appreciate their differences while building partnerships that would lessen the chance of new conflicts.

A Cincinnati - New Taipei City, Taiwan, Sister City relationship was formed over 20 years ago.  In December 2012, Cincinnati and New Taipei City signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen the relationship by committing to a five-year Student Exchange Program.

Activity Review:

The first student exchange took place in April 2013.  Thirty students, two teachers and a small delegation from New Taipei City visited the Cincinnati area for four weeks.  The students stayed with local host families and attended classes in seven high schools across four school districts.

In June 2014, 30 Cincinnati-area high school students from Cincinnati Public Schools, Seton High School, St. Xavier High School, Milford High School, Indian Hill High School and the Forest Hills School District  traveled to New Taipei City for two weeks. They stayed with host families and visited most of the 30 high schools in New Taipei City.

Most recently, in November 2014, 30 students from New Taipei City, with chaperons and a small delegation, visited the Cincinnati area for three weeks, staying with 24 host families and visiting 11 area high schools.

The next exchange will be for 30 Cincinnati-area high school students to travel to New Taipei City for two weeks, June 7-22, 2015.  We currently have 24 students who have expressed interest in going.

The entire exchange program has been considered a resounding success for everyone who has been involved.

Funding:

The cost to fully fund each student for the June 2015 trip is $2,800.  We have identified 11 interested students who will need financial assistance in order to participate in this program.  Therefore, our fundraising goal for this year is $30,000.

The Cincinnati corporate community is very familiar with the importance of global awareness in education.  We are reaching out to the community now to help us make this life-changing opportunity a reality for these deserving students.

We will be contacting you shortly to discuss how you can participate in this worthy endeavor.

Respectfully,
