We the People Nationals

The Underdogs!

The students of Miami Lakes Middle School who have studied the U.S. Constitution in depth this year are comprised of seventh and eighth graders and three sixth graders. Their areas of study range from the philosophical foundations of our government to the responsibilities of citizenship.

This year they surprised everyone by winning the District Level We the People: the Citizen and the Constitution competition in Miami which took place on January 14, 2019.

Again, on February 1, 2019, they astounded detractors by capturing FIRST PLACE at the We the People: the Citizen and the Constitution STATE FINALS!

In both situations these scrappy competitors achieved far greater success than people reasonably expected from them, maybe even exceeding these expectations.

There are no tryouts at Miami Lakes Middle for a chance to compete in this competition. Instead, we have recruitment efforts in the spring in order to get students interested. Although our school’s located in an affluent neighborhood, we do not have the money to pay the full amount per child.  In fact, we are a Title I school with a magnet and an academy. Our students come from diverse working-class families and neighborhoods and commute from far and wide to get a good education.

Our students are very resilient. They have worked hard to prove themselves worthy of representing their county and now their state. Amid some disappointments – their accomplishments haven't received the publicity deserved, but they drew strength and confidence in themselves and their abilities. From adversity they emerged more united and more determined to win.

Please send these students to the We the People: the Citizen and the Constitution National Competition at the National Conference Center in Washington, D.C. from May 3 – 7, 2019! Our goal is to collect $22, 000. The money we receive will go towards the cost of transportation, meals, and accommodations which will be handled by WorldStrides Educational Tours.

In order to allow these worthy students to compete at the national level, WE need for you to get the word out! Also, WE would ask you to PLEASE share this link to your Facebook Timeline!

Very grateful for CH7 WSVN news for sharing our students story with their viewers.
