Our Mission!
After two successful humanitarian and community service trips to Nicaragua with the New Haven Leon Sister City Project, the students and faculty of New Haven's High School in the Community have had to regroup because of a tense political situation currently occurring in Nicaragua. The students were not encouraged to travel there this year. In wanting to find a place where they could once again do the most good for a community in need while learning about other cultures, the group turned to our neighbor and large influence in our New Haven community, Puerto Rico, which has endured incredible hardships since Hurricane Maria.
Why Us?
We have been inspired by previous trips and want to continue to help people in need. New Haven has a vibrant Puerto Rican component, and this service trip will add to the students' knowledge of this very important island, and big contributor to our own culture. This trip will also help us dive further into our school theme of social justice, giving us a first hand experience of what hardship looks like after a natural disaster. We want to make an impact and aid in any way possible!
How Can You Help?
In order to live this experience each student must raise about $1,400. These students have been working hard at fundraising within our school and community. Now we are hoping to get closer to our goal. While they will be expected to put in some of their own money, these students come from financially challenged backgrounds, and are making an effort to raise these funds as a group.
