Brooke's Road to Recovery - A little Help Along the Way
I’m Brooke Parsons—curious learner, data-lover, bike rider, golden retriever mom, wife, future management analyst at the Denver Public Library, and now, breast-cancer fighter.
How we got here
In March, I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma. While the cancer has favorable characteristics for treatment and is curative, it has come at a difficult time for me. I've been unemployed for the last 10 months and transitioned from New Mexico back to Denver.
May 5 | Surgery – I’ll undergo a lumpectomy to remove the tumor.
Post-surgery – Pathology will tell us whether chemotherapy is necessary.
- If chemo is required: it will start 4–6 weeks after surgery, followed by radiation.
- If chemo is not required: I’ll jump straight into three weeks of daily radiation (five days a week).
- Long-term meds – Hormone therapy (likely Tamoxifen) will follow either way, bringing its own side effects.
One week after surgery—May 12—I start a new role at the Denver Public Library. It’s a thrilling fresh start after ten months of unemployment, but the overlap with treatment is, frankly, daunting.
Why I’m asking for help
John’s insurance keeps us covered for the basics, yet our high-deductible plan means thousands in out of pocket expenses. Add in doctor-recommended complementary care—acupuncture, massage, yoga, and nutrition support—to keep me healthy enough to work, and the expenses pile up fast.
If you’re in a position to lend a hand, here’s how every gift will be used:
- Bridge the insurance gap: high deductibles
- Fuel my recovery: holistic therapies that ease side effects and speed healing
- Keep our household steady: so cancer doesn’t derail the fresh start I’ve worked so hard to secure
Other ways to help
Love isn’t measured only in dollars. If financial giving isn’t right for you, please consider:
- Meal support – Healthy vegetarian meals via a Meal Train or digital gift cards (Cava , Flower Child , True Food Kitchen).
- Massage vouchers – A lifesaver for post-surgery soreness.
- Encouragement – Texts, calls, memes, prayers; they all lift me up on tough days.
I know the world is heavy with need right now. Please know there is zero pressure. Your friendship and moral support already mean the world to John and me. But if you’re able to contribute or share this page, thank you from the depths of my very grateful heart.
Together, we’ll beat this cancer and turn the page to brighter days.
With love and determination,
Brooke
