Help Hertford Rebuild After Hurricane Melissa

Help Hertford, Westmoreland Recover After Hurricane Melissa.

The night before Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica, my cousin in Hertford, Westmoreland, Pete, told me he most feared losing the home he’d worked years as a truck driver to build. His fears came true.

My uncles, aunts, cousins, and 85-year-old grandmother are now without shelter and food. I’m raising funds for emergency supplies for the entire Hertford community, which I’ll personally deliver on November 15.

When Hurricane Melissa-the strongest hurricane to make landfall in Jamaica- entered the island between Bluefields, Westmoreland, and Black River, St. Elizabeth, it brought catastrophic winds and flooding that left communities like Hertford devastated.

The 185 mph winds meant homes were unroofed and washed away, crops uprooted, and families displaced. The photos and videos that have been shared do not resemble what was: There is no electricity, clean water, or access to reliable food. Lucky ones, like my grandmother, are 'sheltering' in bathrooms.

Roads remain blocked by fallen trees, flood waters, and power lines, delaying aid to those who need it most. So intervention in the weeks to come will mean strategizing and traveling with care.

Hertford is a humble, hardworking rural community where people depend on farming, small trades, and daily labor to provide for their families.

This fundraiser will help bring immediate relief to families in Hertford and surrounding areas by providing:

  • Temporary shelter materials such as tarpaulins, tents, and hurricane screws
  • Solar lanterns and rechargeable lights for homes without power
  • Clean drinking water and hygiene supplies to prevent illness
  • Food items and basic necessities for elderly residents and children

I know firsthand the strength and resilience of Hertford’s people. My family has deep roots there—my grandmother, mother, uncles, and cousins have spent their lives living in and building this community. While Hurricane Melissa may have taken roofs and belongings, it has not taken their dignity or resilience.

All funds will go directly toward purchasing and delivering these items. Updates and photos will be shared as distributions are made, ensuring accountability. Together, we can bring relief and support to those who have lost what they need to survive.
