What are the problems faced in Malawian Education?
Malawi faces significant challenges in both its education system and wider societal infrastructure. Many schools are overcrowded, under-resourced, and lacking in basic facilities such as electricity, running water, and proper sanitation. It's not uncommon for one teacher to be responsible for over 100 students, making individual attention nearly impossible.
What is the impact of this?
The impact on the children is severe. Overcrowded classrooms and limited resources make it difficult for students to learn effectively, leading to low literacy rates and poor academic performance. The lack of individual attention means those who fall behind rarely catch up. Poverty makes this worse, as many families cannot afford school supplies, and children often attend school hungry.
What can be done to help?
Education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty and solving many of Malawi’s challenges because it empowers individuals with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to improve their lives. A good education opens doors to better job opportunities, higher incomes, and improved health. It also helps people make informed decisions, support their families, and contribute to their communities. Educated individuals are more likely to raise educated children, creating a lasting impact across generations.
What is the context of this information?
This summer, I have the incredible opportunity to travel to Malawi on a school-organised charity trip. During my time there, I, along with others will be working to support local schools and care centres, helping to improve conditions and provide assistance where it’s most needed.
In July, I will be involved in:
Assisting local teachers in classrooms, helping children with key subjects such as reading, writing, and maths.
Working alongside staff at Open Arms Malawi to care for children who are orphaned, abandoned, or vulnerable.
Helping to build and improve school and care facilities, creating safer, more supportive environments for learning and growth.
Organising sports and recreational activities to promote physical health, teamwork, and build relationships with local children.
Supporting fundraising efforts and raising awareness to ensure the long-term sustainability of Open Arms Malawi’s projects.
Contributing to Open Arms Malawi’s mission to provide education, shelter, and care for children in need.
Fundraising Opportunity: Furthermore, a few of us taking part in the trip have also chosen to challenge ourselves by participating in a "Tough Mudder" run on the 7th of June 2025. We’re doing this not only to push our limits, but to help raise vital funds for the important causes we’ll be supporting in Malawi.
How will your Donations Will Help?
All funds raised will go directly towards:
Construction Materials: Funding for building new classrooms, shelters, and facilities that will provide safe, functional spaces for education and care.
Educational Supplies: Purchasing books, stationery, and learning tools that will help students thrive in the classroom.
Sustainable Projects: Contributing to long-term projects that promote education, self-sufficiency, and sustainability in the community.
For countless children in Malawi, education offers the best chance to break the cycle of poverty. However, without access to the necessary resources, many are denied this opportunity. Your support can help give these children a safe and supportive environment where they can learn, develop, and work towards a brighter future. Every contribution—no matter how small—has the power to make a meaningful difference and drive lasting, positive change in their lives.
