Help Bring Ho Yin Mo Home and Fight His ICE Detention
On September 17, Ho Yin Mo was traveling through the Las Vegas airport when ICE detained him. He has been held in a Nevada detention center ever since. His friends and colleagues are waiting for him to come home, and the people he helps every day are asking where he is.
Mo came to the United States legally from Hong Kong. He is legally employed by the California State Legislature and has worked as a Field Representative for Assemblymember Catherine Stefani since January 2025.
In San Francisco, Mo’s work is personal. When a constituent has trouble getting disability benefits or needs help with a state agency, he listens, makes the calls, and follows through. When Chinese-speaking residents gather to meet their Assemblymember, he stands beside her and interprets so they can hear from her and tell her what they need. He helps organize events where older adults learn how to avoid scams, and he works with community groups and small businesses on an Autumn Moon Festival that brings thousands of neighbors together.
After Mo was detained, a constituent wrote about how he had helped her get answers about her maternity leave disability benefits. She described him as “incredibly kind, helpful, professional, and prompt.” To Mo, that was a normal day at work. To her, it made a difficult time easier.
His colleagues know Mo as a patient mentor to young interns and the person they can count on when someone needs help. His friends know his love for his soccer team and his pet guinea pig. They miss him deeply.
Mo’s detention has upended his life. We are raising money to help cover his legal expenses and other costs arising from his detention. Please give what you can and share his story. Mo has helped so many people through difficult moments. Now he needs his community beside him as we work to bring him home.
**A note about donations: Mo is an employee of the California State Legislature and is subject to state gift rules. Please limit your donations to no more than $630 in total during 2026, including any other gifts you have given Mo this year. We ask registered California state lobbyists and lobbying firms not to donate.
If a donor gives more than Mo can accept under the applicable gift rules, the excess will be donated to an immigrant-serving nonprofit.
