Howard's Medical bills from Rattlesnake bite
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Michelle and Howard is a puppy from my last litter of Silken Windhound puppies. Howard is six months old and his dad is a Botanist that travels to research plants. Howard is a beautiful and sweet little soul that was bitten by a Western Diamondback rattlesnake while camping very deep in Mexico earlier this week with his dad.
His dad desperately tried to find antivenin for Howard, driving over 8 hours in Baja Califonia up through Ensenada and finally to San Diego where he received emergency care and the Antivenin he needed.
His first stop was a taco cart where he asked for directions on which way to go to find the fastest veterinary care, where he was given directions to head north along the coast and also informed through the assistance of Google translate that Boiled beans and broth was the best antidote to a snake bite. He gave Howard a bowl of beans and broth and reassured him, the leg would swell but he'd be ok.
After three hours of frantic driving, he found a very rural town and the "vet" clinic was a room with a table with stacks of dog food, where Howard received antibiotics, B complex and an anti-inflammatory. He was directed to go to Ensenada which was another 3 hours north. At this clinic, Howard received more IV fluids and pain meds and his dad was told, he would likely not make it. Still no Antivenin. So, while Howard received his IV fluids, he called ahead to San Diego, desperately looking for antivenin.
He made it back to the States and delivered Howard to a clinic in San Diego, where he received the Antivenin and was finally stabilized. However, they were recommending amputation for the leg. With support from the amazing Silken Windhound community, we were able to get a second and third opinion which was that we should give him a chance to keep his leg.
Since Howard was stable, I recommended he come home where he could continue his care here. Back in Arizona, Howard saw a doctor yesterday(4/6) that said it was too soon to make the decision to amputate and felt optimistic that with proper wound care and regular bandage changes, he would heal, without amputation.
Dear sweet Howard is definitely on the mend, but is not out of the woods yet, with continued medical expenses. Howard and his person could use help paying the mounting medical costs of this nightmare.
