Helping heart attack survivors!

MASSIVE HEART ATTACK!!!

This strikes fear in everyone and most of all in those of us who have suffered one, BUT that's not the worst of it.  It's the what do I do after.

I want to help the people and their families who have survived heart attacks because as a 46 year old father I had a massive heart attack.

Like most people, I was invincible. I ate and drank what I wanted when I wanted.  Sound familiar?  Next thing I knew I was getting out of the Heart Institute after 2 weeks and 2 surgeries, scared and worried but also relieved that I had made it out of there alive.  Then it hit me...what do I do now?  After all, in the hospital there is a safety net, a group who are there looking out for you, guidance, and comfort in knowing that you'll be ok but when I go home I'm on my own!  Sure there's counselling available, and my family, and, and, and, but it really comes down my decisions as to whether or not I will wind up back in the Heart Institute.

Eat right and exercise is the plan, and honestly that works for the first 6 months then it starts to fade.  Exercise is pretty simple, get off your butt and move. Repeat.
But the food....that one is hard! We're programmed from a young age what to eat.  Food ads are EVERYWHERE! The trends make it even worse in that if it isn't greasy/salty/sweet then it just isn't good.  Don't believe me? Turn on the cooking channel for an hour or watch prime time tv and count the number of food commercials!
Now...fast forward a couple of months after the heart attack.  There's a few more snacks, a few more burgers, a little bacon here, a little cheese there, a little pizza won't hurt, and next thing you know you find yourself eating just like you did before the heart attack.  It's a habit that is common to almost all of us who walk out those hospital doors.

I was fortunate to be a classically trained chef with almost 30 yrs in the restaurant industry.  I had a knowledge of food that provided me the opportunity to take the recipes we all love and make them low salt, low fat, and huge flavour! I want to share my good fortune with my fellow survivors and their families.

This cookbook will  feature recipes that we want to eat.   The burgers, the pizza, the cheesy gooey good stuff to hit all the cravings as well as a variety of new and exciting meal ideas.  Making it easy to adapt what you already know but by using all my years of experience, won't put you or your loved one back in the hospital.  Loaded with chef tips and tricks, this will be a kitchen counter staple.

The money raised will be used to fund the production of recipes, photos, and printing of the cookbook,  for facilitating a website/digital book for people to access on their computers and mobile devices.

I have spoken at length with the Ottawa Heart Institute (where I'm also a patient) and not only have the selection of recipes which I have presented them as a representation been approved by their dietitian but I am also in discussions regarding doing an AMA (Ask Me Anything) and even perhaps a cooking demonstration for my fellow patients in the future.

At the end of the day if I can help anyone who, like me, walked out with questions of what to do be armed with the tools to succeed then this will be a huge triumph!
