Help a Young Ukrainian Family Settle in Ottawa

My name is Madeleine, and I am fundraising to help two refugees who escaped the war in Ukraine, Iryna and her son Valentyn. I hope you will join me in making a difference in their lives.

I have hosted Iryna and Valentyn at my home since they arrived in Canada last summer. I am hoping you can donate funds so they can move into an apartment and continue to rebuild their lives here in Canada.

Iryna and Valentyn

Iryna and Valentyn Hrod are from Ternopil, in Ukraine. They fled the Russian attack on Ukraine in the spring of 2022. They arrived in Canada in late May 2022. Maxym, Iryna's son and Valentyn's older brother, remained in Ukraine as a member of the country's armed forces.

Iryna is a single mother and works hard to support herself and her son. She has a job in Ottawa, at the minimum wage. A trained massage therapist, she has recently obtained certification to practice her trade here in Canada. She enjoys taking long walks, and is getting used to Ottawa's winter!

Valentyn is 14 years old and attends Immaculata High School. Like his mom, he is making continuous efforts to learn English. He most enjoys his gym and art classes.

With the generous support of the community and the Ottawa East Minor Hockey Association, he has been able to join a hockey team. He also enjoys drop-in basketball put on by the Lowertown Community Resource Centre, and has learned to skateboard!

We have also explored the wilderness with Valentyn, and he gets along great with my cat, Pascha.

Why I am helping

My name is Madeleine Cloutier. I am 72 years old, a lifelong resident of Ottawa, and I welcomed Iryna and Valentyn into my home in the summer of 2022.

Along with my friends, my family, and some community members, I have sponsored Iryna and Valentyn and they have become like family. I have previously welcomed refugees from Syria into my home, and believe it is my duty to help provide for people in desperate need fleeing war.

How you can help

We are raising funds to provide housing for Iryna and Valentyn. While they have lived with me for 6 months, and we enjoy each other's company, they are hoping to start an independent life in Canada this summer. To do so, we are raising money to help them get settled and stabilized.

Iryna and Valentyn live with me in Sandy Hill, a community in Ottawa. Iryna and Valentyn are actively searching for apartments, and they plan to stay in the neighbourhood or close by. Valentyn's high school is nearby, and Iryna works downtown.

Our Goal

Our objective is to finish raising funds by the end of June 2023, so that Iryna and Valentyn can move into their new home over the summer. That will help ensure that disruptions are minimized during the school year.

What we will do with your donation

Funds will be used to help Iryna and Valentyn settle and stabilize their lives. Major expenditures will include:

Charitable Receipt

These contributions will be eligible for a charitable receipt. The funds will be sent to the Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica, who have generously offered to help collect donations for the family.

Aidez une jeune famille ukrainienne à s'installer à Ottawa

Je m'appelle Madeleine et je collecte des fonds pour aider deux réfugiés, Iryna et son fils Valentyn, qui ont échappé à la guerre en Ukraine. J'espère que vous vous joindrez à moi pour faire une différence dans leur vie.

J'ai accueilli Iryna et Valentyn chez moi depuis leur arrivée au Canada l'été dernier et il est maintenant temps qu’ils se trouvent un logement. Le but de cette campagne est de ramasser des fonds pour qu'ils puissent emménager dans un appartement et continuer à reconstruire leur vie ici au Canada.

Iryna et Valentyn Hrod sont originaires de Ternopil, en Ukraine. Ils ont fui l'attaque russe sur l'Ukraine au printemps 2022. Ils sont arrivés au Canada à la fin du mois de mai 2022. Massothérapeute de formation, elle a récemment obtenu la certification lui permettant d'exercer son métier au Canada. Elle aime faire de longues promenades et commence à s'habituer à l'hiver d'Ottawa !

Valentyn a 14 ans et fréquente l’école secondaire catholique Immaculata. Comme sa mère, il fait des efforts constants pour apprendre l'anglais. Il apprécie particulièrement les cours d’éducation physique et d'art.

Grâce à la générosité de la communauté, il a pu se joindre à une équipe de hockey récréative au sein de l'Association de hockey mineur de l'Est d'Ottawa et participe à des séances de basket-ball organisées par le Centre de ressources communautaires de la Basse-Ville. Il a également appris à faire du skateboard !

Nous avons également exploré la nature avec Valentyn, et il s'entend très bien avec mon chat, Pascha.

Pourquoi j'aide

Avec mes amis, ma famille et certains membres de la communauté, j'ai parrainé Iryna et Valentyn, qui sont devenus comme des membres de ma famille. J'ai déjà accueilli des réfugiés syriens chez moi et j'estime qu'il est de mon devoir d'aider les personnes en détresse qui fuient la guerre.

Comment vous pouvez nous aider

Nous collectons des fonds pour fournir un logement à Iryna et Valentyn. Bien qu'ils aient vécu avec moi pendant 6 mois et que nous nous apprécions les uns les autres, ils espèrent commencer une vie indépendante au Canada cet été. Pour ce faire, nous collectons des fonds pour les aider à s'installer et à se stabiliser.

Iryna et Valentyn vivent avec moi sur la Côte-de-Sable, une communauté d'Ottawa. Iryna et Valentyn recherchent activement des appartements et prévoient de rester dans le quartier ou à proximité. L'école secondaire de Valentyn se trouve à proximité, et Iryna travaille au centre-ville.

Notre objectif

Notre objectif est de terminer la collecte de fonds d'ici la fin du mois de juin 2023, afin qu'Iryna et Valentyn puissent emménager dans leur nouvelle maison au cours de l'été. Cela permettra de minimiser les perturbations pendant l'année scolaire.

Ce que nous ferons avec votre don

Les fonds seront utilisés pour aider Iryna et Valentyn à s'installer et à stabiliser leur vie. Les principales dépenses seront les suivantes

Le premier et le dernier mois de loyer d'un appartement. Coût estimé : 4 000 $ (le loyer moyen d'un appartement de deux chambres à Ottawa est de 2 312 $ par mois).

Ces contributions feront l'objet d'un reçu d’organisme de bienfaisance. La Basilique Cathédrale Notre-Dame a généreusement offert d'aider de collecter ces dons pour la famille.
