Hey, my name is Akil. After over a month of navigating one of the most stressful and exhausting periods of our lives, my girlfriend (Iwona) and I were able to find a new place. We're glad to FINALLY have found a place together with our pets: two cats (Gribbles and Murka), dog (Frida), and iguana (Chupa).
While our situation has improved, we're still struggling. The financial burden and personal toll of everything we have been through over the past several months has been hard to deal with, and we are asking for help as we continue to recover.
Earlier this year, I came down with shingles, which kept me out of work for an entire month. The nerve damage from the shingles on the right side of my face led to Bell's Palsy, which caused partial paralysis on the right side of my face. While I've mostly recovered, the effects are still lingering along with the loss of income and depleted savings.
Before we had any real chance to recover financially, our building was issued a full vacate order in March due to serious structural issues, caused directly by our landlord's years of neglect and unaddressed building violations. We were forced out of the home we had built together through no fault of our own without much help or resources to help is navigate this situation. When we were forced to vacate, I was at work, while my girlfriend was only able to grab our pets and a few bags.
What followed was weeks of chaos: temporary housing, scrambling to move what we could, taking days off work we could not afford, paying for storage, and caring for four animals through all this who were scared and stressed throughout this whole ordeal. All of this on top of already depleted savings and still recovering from illness.
We have now secured a new apartment and covered the move-in costs ourselves. But a significant amount of our belongings remain trapped in the vacated building, where we have been unable to gain full access. We have found out out that much of what is still there has already been damaged. We are facing the reality of having to replace a large number of essential items from scratch, on top of everything else.
Every dollar and share is greatly appreciated.
