Help to restore and rebuild the House of Numst’ - a heritage building in Bella Coola, Nuxalkulmc.
The House of Numst' is the living embodiment of Nuxalk self-determination. Once restored, the building will serve as a community dialogue centre, recording studio and new home for Nuxalk Radio.
The House of Numst’ building is a replica of the House of Nusmata that once stood on the shore of the Bella Coola River at the village of Q’umk’uts in 1846. Often photographed by tourists and locals, it is an old longhouse with cedar plank-siding. The mouth of a tall totem pole acts as the doorway and tells the story of Nusmata, the place of origins. Inside, three more totem poles hold up the roof.
Due to structural integrity and safety concerns, the House of Numst’ has not been in use for over a decade. Given that almost all historic buildings in the territory have been lost, the House of Numst’ will be the foundation of Nuxalk cultural resurgence -a much needed centre for Nuxalk Nationhood, art, heritage and cultural practices.
The building will contain an intergenerational language-learning hub by housing Nuxalk Radio: a key community asset and educator. Nuxalk Radio is currently located in an old trailer. View the Nuxalk Radio Film [sign up to watch].
