At 1 PM on March 20, 2025, a fire broke out at my mum's house while she was at work. Above all else, we are grateful that no one was hurt.

The fire started near the laundry door, quickly spreading up the walls and across the roof, tearing through the house. Despite the best efforts of the firefighters, only a few items from my brother’s bedroom were salvageable. The house has now been condemned, and everything else—our family’s memories, keepsakes, and belongings—is gone.

My mum, Marissa (53), my little brother, Alekso (16, soon to be 17), and their beloved dachshund, Bugsy, have lost everything. For now, I’m incredibly thankful to be able to take them into my small unit, where I live with my own dog, Darla. While space is tight, we are holding onto each other and focusing on what truly matters—family.

But the reality is, we need to rebuild. We need to find not just a house, but a home where we can start over together.
