Hot Spell Farm Flash Fundraiser

Howdy y’all! Hot Spell Farm is dreaming up something delicious and we need some community support to make it happen. From seeds and compost, to tools and infrastructure, there's a long list of things needed to bring our dream to life!

Hot Spell is run by full-time farmworkers and people in the food service industry and nonprofit agriculture world. Without the conventional forms of start up funding that many new businesses have access to, Hot Spell is built from the ground up - our startup funds consist of portions of our paychecks, and that’s it! We're striving to create a model for a collectively owned and operated farm that will thrive and feed our community for years to come. Hot Spell is one of the only cooperatively, worker-run farms in Texas. This is the very beginning of an exciting new chapter of what farming could look and feel like, we just need a little help to get on our feet!

About the farm:

Hot Spell Farm is located in Elgin, TX on the unceded territory of the Lipan Apache, Coahuiltecan, Tonkawa, and Jumanos peoples. We lease our growing space of just under two acres for free from a landowner who cares deeply about environmental stewardship and our local food system. While this land access helps us through a major barrier to starting our farm, we are still shouldering other major costs- we pay for all of our own supplies, equipment, and utilities.

We are collectively operated by five young, farmer-owners, each with an expansive range of farming experience. Many hands (and minds!) make light work. Our farm is a place that centers the ideas, abilities, dreams, and health of the people who do the work to produce food. Together, we are reimagining what farming can look like while growing fruits and veggies for the Elgin and Austin metro area. We are committed to farming in a way that is sustainable to the land and to our bodies & spirits. Our motto is: have fun, be hot, and grow good food!

Hot Spell Farm began in the Summer of 2023, and we are gearing up for our first official growing season in the Spring of 2024. We can’t wait to serve our central Texas community! We want to provide accessible, high-quality produce to anyone and everyone, whether friend or foe ;)

How you can help:

While our team collectively invests in this project, we still don’t have enough capital to cover all of Hot Spell’s startup costs. However, with virtually no income and half a year of hard work and transformation, we’ve been able to repair and nourish our working soil and barn areas to what it is today - a space that is getting ready to flourish this season.

We’re seeking $15,000 to make equipment purchases for growing, harvesting, and processing our produce. Right now, the funds we receive determine the stability of our 2024 spring season, and every single dollar counts! Whether it’s $5, $50, or $500, your contributions will directly impact our ability to get growing.
