Our sister and friend Samantha Bird is a 29-year-old pastry chef and baker in San Diego. Back in Spring 2020, she was laid-off due to Covid-19, which significantly impacted the restaurant industry. Her very first day as an unemployed baker, she took her last paycheck, went to a bulk supplier, and bought her favorite high-quality butter, sugar, and flour and has been hard at work baking from home ever since. She now has her own small business (SB.Boulangerie), participates in a bakers collaborative project (The Bakers Collaborative), sells to individuals, at local pop-ups, and is featured at Communal Coffee in San Diego. All of this from her one-bedroom apartment. Needless to say, she is a rockstar.
This past year, Samantha has been working virtually non-stop, and besides playing with her rescue dogs, the one thing that has helped keep her healthy and recharged is roller-skating. She skates nearly every day.
Unfortunately, two nights ago (February 8th, around 9 pm) while skating at a skate park in Linda Vista, she took an awkward fall and broke both bones in her right forearm. She is now hospitalized and under pain management due to the severity of the break. She went into surgery last night and is now recovering in the hospital before being released. Samantha is uninsured, and the cost of this accident will be crippling for her.
Let’s give back to this boss of a woman who has inspired so many of us during this unbelievable time. Any amount of support is very much appreciated. We want to not only help pay her hospital and surgery bills but also provide her a cushion of financial support until she can bake again.
