Funeral expenses for Ricardo

*UPDATE* Unfortunately, today January 19, 2024 at approximately 1:06pm my grandfather passed away peacefully at the hospice facility surrounded by wonderful caring and excellent staff and accompanied by his daughters and loving wife. As we’re trying to raise funds for his funeral expenses during these difficult and trying times. All help is appreciated by the family. Thank you so much. 

On December 15, 2023 my grandpa called me and complained of weakness in his lower extremities, saying he was unable to walk. Everyone who knows my grandpa knows that he is a very independent man who even at 77 years old would drive himself and my grandma everywhere. He was my grandmas primary caregiver due to her Alzheimer’s illness. Even when my grandpa was not feeling well he would always say he was 100% fine. He loathes hospitals and clinics, so we knew if he was complaining it was something serious. So we rushed him to the emergency room to get him checked out. After a bunch of testing scans, and multiple hospital transfers they informed us that he had 2 masses in his cerebellum and 1 mass in his lung. Since receiving that devastating news he had deteriorated massively and very rapidly. Just two weeks after his first hospital visit, the doctors at Methodist hospital informed us that he was Stage 4 lung cancer metastatic to the brain, it had quickly spread to his entire lungs, pancreas, liver and esophagus. His oncologist had initially referred him to begin radiation treatment, however in just a short week or less since that treatment plan was made, my grandpa has deteriorated more and is unable to speak, unable to swallow/eat anything, and having trouble breathing. As we witnessed him rapidly deteriorating and in such discomfort and pain, the tough decision was made to transition him to hospice. Our families goal through this Go fund Me is to raise money that will go to his burial costs and funeral.

El 15 de diciembre de 2023 mi abuelo me llamó y se quejó de debilidad en sus extremidades inferiores, diciendo que no podía caminar. Todos los que conocen a mi abuelo saben que es un hombre muy independiente que incluso a sus 77 años conduciría él y mi abuela a todas partes. Él era el cuidador principal de mi abuela debido a su enfermedad de Alzheimer. Incluso cuando mi abuelo no se sentía bien, siempre decía que estaba 100% bien. Detesta los hospitales y las clínicas, así que sabíamos que si se quejaba era algo grave. Así que lo llevamos rápidamente a la sala de emergencias para que lo revisaran. Después de una serie de pruebas exploratorias y múltiples traslados al hospital, nos informaron que tenía 2 masas en el cerebelo y 1 masa en el pulmón. Desde que recibió esa devastadora noticia, se había deteriorado enormemente y muy rápidamente. Apenas dos semanas después de su primera visita al hospital, los médicos del Hospital Metodista nos informaron que tenía cáncer de pulmón en etapa 4, metastásico en el cerebro, que rápidamente se había extendido a todos sus pulmones, páncreas, hígado y esófago. Inicialmente, su oncólogo lo había remitido para que comenzara un tratamiento de radiación; sin embargo, en tan solo una semana o menos desde que se elaboró el plan de tratamiento, mi abuelo se ha deteriorado aún más y no puede hablar, no puede tragar ni comer nada y tiene problemas para respirar. Como fuimos testigos de su rápido deterioro y de tal malestar y dolor, se tomó la difícil decisión de trasladarlo a un centro de cuidados paliativos. El objetivo de nuestra familia a través de Go Fund Me es recaudar dinero que se destinará a los costos de su entierro y funeral. Desafortunadamente, hoy, 19 de enero de 2024, aproximadamente a la 1:06 p. m., mi abuelo falleció pacíficamente en el centro de cuidados paliativos, rodeado de un personal maravilloso y excelente, y acompañado por sus hijas y su amada esposa. Mientras intentamos recaudar fondos para los gastos de su funeral durante estos tiempos difíciles. Toda ayuda es apreciada por la familia. Muchas gracias.
