Hello friends,

We are Seung Heon (Hosea) Sheen, Eunseul (Sarah) Jeong, and Haum Hazel Sheen, a family of three moving from Vancouver, Canada all the way across the Atlantic Ocean to Oxford, UK.

This is a big life change for us: moving with a 1-year old on a 14-hour flight, away from our family and friends, to a whole new country and continent that we’ve never lived in before! But your support can help us with this big life change that God has called us into.

A little bit about ourselves…

In the early years of getting to know each other, Hosea and Sarah shared the vision of providing education in Madagascar. Step by step, God has led us together to Regent College, where we found home with students from all around the globe and from diverse backgrounds. While she worked on her Master of Arts in Christian Studies degree, Sarah worked part-time as Program Coordinator of Pastoral Formation Team, growing knowledge and expertise in higher education leadership and pastoral education.

On the other hand, as Hosea completed his Master of Arts in Theological Studies at Regent, his vocation as a Christian scholar and teacher became clear. He especially discovered a particular love for Augustine of Hippo, a 4–5th century theologian who famously wrote the Confessions. Hosea also realized that his previous training in maths and computer science can provide him with a unique theological and philosophical perspective into many of our modern questions. Over the past year, his sense of calling as an academic theologian grew deeper as he got to share his research with other scholars in several academic conferences across North America.

On top of these, both Sarah and Hosea were fortunate to have received ministry apprenticeships, focused on preaching and teaching the Word of God, through the Artizo Program at St. Peter's Fireside.

Haum Hazel just turned one year old, and she is incredibly active and adorable! We are very curious if she will end up developing a British accent.

Why are we going to Oxford?

Hosea received an offer to study in the DPhil (PhD) program in Theology and Religion at Oriel College, University of Oxford beginning in the Fall 2025 term. This will be a 3-year program, as Hosea reads, writes, and eventually defends his dissertation.

Sarah intends to find a pastoral position at a local church or administrative role in a higher education institution. Hosea will also look for a ministry position in a Church of England parish and continue his training for ordained ministry in the Anglican church.

What will Hosea study?

Hosea’s research will explore the intersection between Augustine, mathematics, and Artificial Intelligence. More specifically: he will explore what Augustine has to say about how mathematics can help us to better taste the truth and beauty of God.

This investigation will involve an exploration of how Augustine transformed the classical Pythagorean search for mathematical certainty into the Christian search for God’s beauty. Hosea will then put Augustine into dialogue with modern philosophers, such as Kurt Gödel, Hans-Georg Gadamer, and Simone Weil, to highlight Augustine’s potential Christian contributions to the philosophy of mathematics. The project will conclude with a reflection on how Augustine’s vision of mathematics can contribute to our understanding of the promises and the limits of Artificial Intelligence.

Hosea’s project will seek to provide answers to many practical questions. First, what is the spiritual significance of studying and learning mathematics? Second, how can we as a society better approach our common search for truth and certainty? Finally, how can we live and flourish together as human beings in this age of Artificial Intelligence?

Where are the funds going to?

The total projected cost of the first year at Oxford is approximately $130,000 CAD (about £70,000). This includes tuition, housing, food, visa, and healthcare.

The cost for the first year is higher than the following years due to healthcare surcharges, which need to be paid upfront for the full duration of PhD. Healthcare costs in total comes out to be about $20,000 CAD (£11,640).

So far, funding has come through various sources of scholarships, savings, family support, student loans, and student line of credit. Yet, these are not enough to cover the full costs. We especially need help paying for the initial visa and healthcare costs, and we are asking for your help to offset the costs there.

We were initially hesitant to make the move without sufficient funds. However, over a few months of discernment and prayer, we decided to share our journey with our friends and community —to invite you as witnesses of our ministry in the long haul! God reminded Hosea that he has not received this fortunate opportunity just for the sake of his career, but so that his research and study will become a gift to God’s people. Sarah was reminded from her past mission fundraising that even our journey to Oxford is ultimately God’s mission, not ours —which God only makes possible through His people together.

What’s our long-term financial plan?

Hosea is currently applying to many different scholarships and grants, such as the SSHRC doctoral fellowship (he was waitlisted this year), Templeton Foundation grants, and other scholarships from within and outside Oxford. Both Sarah and Hosea are also planning to find employment soon after moving to Oxford, in order to fund our tuition and living costs there.

안녕하세요, 여러분! 신승헌, 정은슬, 그리고 딸 신하음 인사드립니다. 저희 가정은 저희의 아늑한 보금자리가 되어주었던 캐나다 밴쿠버를 조만간 떠나 영국 옥스퍼드로 향하는 여정을 준비하고 있습니다. 가족과 친구들, 교회 식구들을 뒤로하고 이제 갓 돌이 된 아기와 14시간이나 되는 비행기를 타고 떠나갈 생각을 하니 걱정이 되는 것은 사실입니다. 저희가 한 번도 지내본 적 없는 유럽이라는 새로운 대륙으로 이주한다는 것이 아직은 먼 이야기처럼 느껴지기도 합니다. 아직은 걱정과 불확실함 가운데 있는 저희에게 여러분들의 관심이 하나님께서 저희를 부르시는 새로운 도전에 큰 도움이 됩니다!

저희 가정을 소개합니다

연애 시작 전 서로를 알아가는 단계에서 저희는 은슬 자매가 선교하러 갔었던 마다가스카르의 교육 선교에 대한 비전을 함께 나눴습니다. 하나님께서는 저희를 준비시키기 위해 우선 리젠트 신학대로 보내셨습니다. 그곳에서 전 세계의 여러 배경을 가진 학생들과 함께 지난 4년 동안 공부하면서 여러 경험을 쌓아나갔습니다. 우선 은슬 자매는 Master of Arts in Christian Studies 프로그램을 들으며 신학대 내에서 목회 학생들을 돕는 파트타임 일을 함께 했습니다. 그를 통해 기독교 대학 리더십 및 운영, 목회 훈련과 교육에 대한 경험과 지혜를 얻는 유익한 시간을 가졌습니다.

한편, 승헌 형제는 Master of Arts in Theological Studies를 마무리하면서 크리스천 학자와 가르치는 자로서의 부르심을 확인받았습니다. 특히나 고백록으로 잘 알려진 4~5세기 교부 어거스틴의 삶과 글을 깊이 공부할 기회를 가졌습니다. 또한 최근 인공지능 시대에서 나오는 새로운 신학적, 철학적 화두에 컴퓨터 공학과 수학 배경을 가진 학자로서 그만의 고유한 기독교적 답변을 줄 수 있다는 것 또한 더 분명해졌습니다. 최근 2년간 북미의 여러 신학 학회에서 연구 결과를 발표하면서 다른 학자들과 나눔과 그들의 격려를 통해 신학자로서의 부르심에 더욱 확신을 가질 수 있었습니다.

각자의 부르심과 은사가 더욱 분명해지는 동안, 저희는 함께 교회 사역 훈련을 받을 기회도 있었습니다. 밴쿠버 다운타운에 위치한 St. Peter’s Anglican 교회에 출석하면서 Artizo Program이라는 설교와 가르침에 중점을 둔 하나님의 말씀과 복음 중심의 목회자 훈련을 통해 교회 목회에 대한 비전 또한 키워가는 시간을 보냈습니다. 이렇게 따로, 또 같이 저희를 자라게 하신 하나님의 선한 뜻과 계획을 누리는 지난 3년 간의 시간이었습니다.

그 와중에 태어난 이제 막 돌이 되는 딸 하음이는 새로운 것에 많은 호기심을 가지고 움직이는 걸 정말 좋아합니다. 혼자 일어서기에 익숙해져서 조만간 걸음마를 떼지 않을까 싶습니다.

옥스퍼드에서의 계획

이번 봄, 승헌 형제는 옥스퍼드 대학교의 Oriel College에서 신학 & 종교학 DPhil (PhD) Program에 2025년 가을 입학 허가를 받았습니다. 공부와 연구에 집중된 3년 프로그램으로 졸업 논문으로 마무리할 예정입니다.

옥스퍼드에 있으면서 승헌 형제는 성공회 목회직을 파트타임으로 병행하고, 함께 이주할 은슬 자매는 교회에서 목회 관련 일이나 이전의 경험을 살려 대학교 행정직을 찾아볼 계획입니다.

어거스틴 연구와 신학에 대하여

신학이라고 하면 교회와 신앙생활과 중요한 연관이 있어 보이지 않을 수 있습니다. 하지만 신학은 각각 그리스도인들이라면 누구나 하는 하나님에 대한 이해라고 할 수 있습니다. 예배와 성도들의 교제, 말씀을 근거로 한 가르침, 가정과 일, 심지어 환경과 과학까지, 신학은 우리 삶 구석구석에 영향을 미치고 있습니다.

승헌 형제는 컴퓨터공학 박사 과정 중 그 연구에서 비롯된 보다 근본적인 질문들에 대한 답을 찾기 위하여 신학을 공부하기 시작했습니다. 지금도 언제나 뒤편엔 그때의 궁금증이 남아 있었습니다. 수학과 자연과학, 그리고 공학이 보여주는 이 세상의 질서와 아름다움에는 어떤 의미가 있을까요? 나아가서 그리스도인으로서 수학을 공부하고 코딩을 한다는 것은 무슨 의미일까요? 이 글을 읽고 계신 여러분들도 회계사일 수도, 공학자일 수도, 소프트웨어 개발자일 수도 있습니다. 여러분의 일이 하나님의 시선에서 어떠한 의미가 있는지 생각해 보신 적이 있나요?

그런 고민 가운데서 어거스틴을 접한 승헌 형제는 어거스틴이 신학뿐만이 아니라 수학에서도 하나님의 진리와 아름다움을 발견했다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 우리가 학교에서 수학 문제를 풀던 경험을 생각하면, 그런 딱딱하고 지루한 학문 안에 하나님이 어디에 있는가 생각하기 쉬울 것입니다. 하지만 어거스틴은 가장 단순한 산수 문제를 푸는 순간에서도, 하나님의 형상으로서 궁극적인 진리와 영원한 아름다움을 추구하는 인간의 모습을 보았던 것입니다.

그리고 승헌 형제는 그런 어거스틴의 고찰을 통해 자신의 컴퓨터공학 공부를 되돌아볼 수 있었습니다. AI의 시대에서 우리 그리스도인들은 어떤 자세로 살아가야 할까요? 그리고 AI에 대해서 기독교적 시각에서 어떻게 생각할 수 있을까요? AI란 결국 수학적 연산을 수행하는 알고리즘이라는 점을 고려할 때, 수학에 담긴 신학적 의미를 탐구하면 자연스럽게 AI의 신학적 의미도 발견할 수 있을 것입니다.

후원금은 어디에 사용되나요?

저희 가정에 첫 해 총 생활비와 학비는 캐나다 달러로 13만 불입니다. (약 7만 파운드) 이는 학비, 주거비, 식비, 비자, 그리고 건강보험 비가 포함됩니다. 저희는 이제까지 장학금, 저금, 가족들의 도움과 학자금, 대출을 통해서 저희의 생활비를 준비하고 있었습니다. 하지만 저희가 옥스퍼드에 가기 위해선 추가로 2만 불이 필요한 상황입니다.

자금이 충분치 않은 상황에서 저의 가정은 영국행을 오랫동안 망설였습니다. 몇 달간의 기도를 통해 주님의 뜻을 분별하는 시간을 가지는 동안 저희의 계획을 들은 친구들이 먼저 후원을 열어보는 것이 어떠냐는 제안을 해주었습니다. 그분들의 격려를 통해서 주님께서는 저희가 저희의 힘과 능력으로 가는 것이 아니라, 저희가 공부하는 과정 또한 주님의 역사와 공급하심을 보여 주려고 하는 뜻이 있으시구나, 하고 생각하게 되었습니다. 또한 주님께선 이런 시간을 통해 저희 평생의 동역자들을 세워주셔서, 그분이 부르시는 분들을 주님의 선교를 함께 이루어 가는 자로, 그리고 주님의 뜻을 증거하는 자로 함께 세워주시리라는 확신을 가지게 되었습니다.

승헌 형제는 계속해서 여러 캐나다 국비 장학금 및 연구비를 신청하고 있습니다. 승헌 형제와 은슬 자매 둘 다 옥스퍼드에 적응 후 생활비를 충당하기 위해 구직 기간을 가질 예정입니다. 몇몇 분들이 옥스퍼드에 가면 얻을 수 있는 사립 장학금의 기회가 있다고 나눠주셨습니다. 저희가 옥스퍼드에서도 저희의 비전을 함께 나눌 수 있는 분들을 만날 수 있길 함께 기도해 주세요!

저희는 또한 2년마다 한 번씩 여름에 마다가스카르에 가서 목회자 교육에 참여할 수 있길 소망하고 있습니다. 아직 옥스퍼드 이주 펀드도 부족한 상황이지만 저희가 가능한 선에서 최대한 자주 방문하면서 처음의 마음을 잊지 않으려 합니다. 지금은 아직 먼 얘기 같지만, 빠른 시일 내에 방문할 수 있는 기회가 있길 기도해 주세요!

마지막으로, 최근 영국의 Z세대에서 교회와 신앙에 관한 관심이 급격하게 커지고 있다고 합니다. 기독교 신학의 한 주축을 맡고 있던 옥스퍼드에서 예수님의 이름이 높여지고 길을 잃고 있던 양들이 돌아오는 기적이 있기를 함께 기도해 주세요!
