Help a Horror Film Student Finish His MFA

Dear family, dear friends, and friends yet made,

After more than a decade in Tokyo, where I worked as a commercial video producer for Bento Labs, I made the monumental decision to shift my life and career in a new direction, studying film and television production back in the US. After finishing the first semester of my Masters film program, I can already say that it’s been a transformative experience.

As most of you are already well (if not exhaustingly) aware, my infatuation with the experiential nature of film is one that is deep and enduring—whether it’s evoking gasps of wonder or terror, met with shrieks of laughter or fear, or instilling inspiration or introspection in audiences. I also have a firm belief in the role film can play in shaping future generations for the better, such as inspiring new avenues of scientific endeavor, by showing glimpses of how societies, humanity, and the universe itself might exist in an endless diversity of imagined realms. In particular I’m interested in Horror and Science-Fiction. I also hope to adapt Japanese versions of these genres and bring more film opportunities to my friends back in Japan.

The fact that I will be one of an exceedingly small number of Black, multi-lingual, and LGBTQ+ individuals working as an executive within the industry following my graduation in the Spring of 2024 is in itself a testament to just how important this act of imagining alternative and inclusive futures really can be. Aspiring to bring fresh voices into the industry, thereby making sure that new and diverse stories continue to be told is another great motivation in this undertaking.

Becoming one of only twenty-four out of hundreds of applicants admitted into the University of California’s exclusive Peter Stark Producing Program in Los Angeles was the first step, and a result that I still have to pinch myself over on a regular basis. The dream of one day having to field an interview at Cannes or deliver an acceptance speech at the Academy Awards for the latest science fiction film I championed will require many further strides down this path though, which is where this GoFundMe comes in.

Between the point where I now stand and that glittering horizon stands an education that totals more than $170,000 USD, of which a third has already been covered by a scholarship that was generously bestowed on me by the George Lucas Foundation (of Star Wars fame). A third will be paid out of my own pocket, through a combination of loans and part-time work I’m currently undertaking in paid internships within the film industry and freelance graphic design. The final third is one I hope to cover through additional scholarships and the generosity of friends, such as yourself, who may be in a position to lend their generous support and invest in my future.

Thus far, I’ve applied to almost one hundred scholarships, with only the one mentioned above having been successful. Even so, I decided to wait until the end of my first semester to broach this request so that I had a realistic picture of the total costs involved, and only after reassuring myself that this particular pathway would justify such an investment. At this point, I can already say that the experience has been nothing less than life-changing, which is not something I say lightly. In keeping with that, I’ve resolved to dedicate 1 hour of volunteering for the homeless or LGBTQ+ youth in the Los Angeles area for every $1,000 USD pledged to support me.

Any amount you can afford to give will be most gratefully received and will contribute to making a big difference in the overall cost of my education by helping to cover additional costs, such as textbooks, transportation, industry fees, language lessons I'm pursuing on my own on top of school and work (Japanese, French, and Spanish) and other expenses that school loans don’t cover.

大切な友人の皆さんへ

東京で映像プロデューサー（BENTO LABS）として10年以上過ごした後、私は自分の人生とキャリアを新しい方向にシフトさせるという大きな決断を下し、アメリカに戻って映画とテレビ番組制作を学ぶことにことにしました。修士課程の1学期を終えた今、私はすでに、この経験が大きな変化をもたらすものであったことを実感しています。

皆さんもよくご存知のように、私は映画の体験的な性質に強く惹かれています。映画は驚きや恐怖を引き起こし、笑いや恐怖の悲鳴に応え、観客にインスピレーションや内省を与えます。また、社会、人類、そして宇宙そのものが、無限に広がる想像の世界の中でどのように存在しているのかを垣間見せることで、科学的探求の新しい道を切り開くなど、映画が未来の世代をより良く形成するために果たすことができる役割について、私は確固たる信念を抱いています。

映画の中でも特にホラーやSFに興味があります。これらのジャンルで日本を舞台にした作品をプロデュースし、日本で今まで一緒に働いてきた友人たちと仕事をまた一緒にすることが大きな目標の一つです。

2024年の春に卒業する私は、黒人、マルチリンガル、LGBTQ+というマイノリティの一人としてこの業界で働くことになります。業界に新鮮な声を届けることで、新しく多様なストーリーが語られることを目指していきたいと思っています。

数百人の応募者の中から、カリフォルニア大学のピーター・スターク・プロデューサー・プログラムに入学できるたった24人のうちの1人になれたことがその第一歩で、このプログラムに合格したことは今でも信じられません。しかし、いつかカンヌ映画祭でインタビューに応じたり、アカデミー賞の授賞式で自分がプロデュースした映画のスピーチをしたりする夢を実現するためには、この険しい道をさらに進んでいく必要があり、そのうちの一つに金銭面があります。そのためにこのGoFundMeの出番となりました。

この二年間で、学費などで合計170,000ドル（2300万円）がかかる見込みです。幸運にもそのうちの約3~4分の1は、スターウォーズで有名なジョージ・ルーカス財団からの奨学金で賄うことができました。残りの部分は学生ローンと、現在取り組んでいる映画業界での有給インターンシップやフリーランスのグラフィックデザインなどのアルバイトを組み合わせて、私費で賄う予定です。理想は自分で全て支払いすることですが、とても高額なため、私の将来に投資してくれる寛大な友人の支援がもしあればとこのプロジェクトを立ち上げました。

これまで100近い奨学金に応募してきましたが、残念ながら貰えたのは上記の1つだけです。

もし、皆さんから支援をいただけるのであれば、私は、1,000ドルの支援につき1時間、ロサンゼルスのホームレスやLGBTQ+の若者のためにボランティア活動をします。
